The 2026 World Series between the Milwaukee Brewers and Tampa Bay Rays is shaping up to be historic for several reasons.
First and foremost is that it will end with a first-time champion being crowned. Milwaukee hasn’t appeared in the Fall Classic since 1982, while the Rays fell short against the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2020 and the Philadelphia Phillies in 2008. Neither has ever won it all.
However, it’s also an interesting matchup from a payroll perspective, with both squads coming from extremely small markets. Extra playoff revenue might not be enough for either team to retain its impending free agents—enter the Toronto Blue Jays.
The Blue Jays are looking to upgrade their roster to get themselves back into contention in 2027 and there are at least players they should keep their eyes on, in the Fall Classic.
Freddy Peralta, Jake Bauers and JoJo Romero should be Blue Jays targets this offseason
Freddy Peralta
To say it’s been a rollercoaster year for the ALCS MVP would be an understatement.
The Brewers traded him to the New York Mets before the season began, anticipating his next contract would be out of their price range. He went on to record an abysmal 4.99 ERA across 22 starts before being flipped to Tampa Bay at the trade deadline.

The Rays wound up getting Peralta back on track, just as everyone expected they would when they acquired him. He was his usual All-Star self down the stretch and has been lights out in the playoffs.
Peralta would be a massive upgrade to the Blue Jays’ rotation for 2027. He would slot in as a number two with ace upside behind Dylan Cease. Further helping his case is that he’s made at least 30 starts each of the last four years, which is the kind of durability Toronto’s front office covets.
Jake Bauers
Speaking of whirlwinds, Bauers has undergone one of the most surprising career renaissances in recent history.
Once a top prospect in the Rays organization, he was underperforming and ready to retire two years ago before landing with the Brewers. He hinted at a breakout by recording a .752 OPS in a platoon role last season, then fully arrived with an All-Star caliber campaign in 2026.

The NLCS MVP has shown why he’s a perfect target for the Blue Jays throughout the playoffs thus far. He hits for power, has an elite eye at the plate, and can play either corner outfield position. Very few players on the market check all these boxes.
JoJo Romero
While Aaron Ashby has deservedly gotten much of the credit for the success of the Brewers’ bullpen, Romero’s contributions shouldn’t be overlooked.
Milwaukee acquired Romero from the St. Louis Cardinals at the trade deadline to give themselves another left-handed weapon, and he’s done his job admirably. He finished the regular season with an ERA below 3.80 for the fifth year in a row while striking out almost a batter per inning.

The Blue Jays need another reliable southpaw in their bullpen to pair with Mason Fluharty. Romero may not be the flashiest name available—that would be Adrian Morejon—but he’s a quality option who would make the team better.
