The Toronto Blue Jays made plenty of bold moves in the offseason in the hopes building a roster that could contend for the World Series. And while we're less than a week into the season, the early returns haven't been great, as Toronto recorded a commanding 8-2 win on Friday sandwiched between two dreadful losses to the Baltimore Orioles where the Blue Jays were outscored 21-7.

One of the team's early weaknesses is the bullpen. In 13 innings of work, the Jays’ relief corps had given up a whopping 13 runs on 14 hits with seven walks and 16 strikeouts. While the whiffs are certainly is a welcome sight, the run prevention has been a disaster and serve as a reminder to last year's nightmarish season.

But luckily for Toronto, the are plenty of major league-caliber players available right now thanks to all of the roster cuts that took place around the league prior to Opening Day.

With that in mind, lets take a look take a look at 3 players who were designated for assignment who could be cheap, last-minute fits on this Blue Jays’ roster.

Martinez spent the past four years with the Houston Astros before entering free agency in the offseason. Despite often flip-flopping between the majors and minors, Martinez appeared in 111 games for the Astros’ big league squad over that time where he had a 3.93 ERA in 137 1/3 innings.

He's coming off a solid 2024 campaign in which he posted a 3-2 record across a career-high 44 appearances where he had a 3.59 ERA and 1.27 WHIP in 52 2/3 innings.

He's also had a busy spring. He signed with the Mariners in the offseason but was DFA'd after a tough start to the spring. He was claimed by the Miami Marlins on March 15 before being DFA’d by them and subsequently outrighted to Triple-A. Martinez’s experience could help the Jays right about now.
