On Monday, the Toronto Blue Jays finally made their biggest move this offseason by signing free agent outfielder Anthony Santander to a five-year, $92.5 million deal with a club option for a sixth season. While the earlier acquisition of Andrés Giménez from the Guardians by trade or the signing of elite reliever Jeff Hoffman weren’t significant enough on their own, but nothing beats landing a big-time star power bat to inject into their 2025 lineup.
Now that the vault has finally opened wide, the Blue Jays should not stop right there while they have the momentum going their way, Let’s take a look at three subsequent moves that they should make immediately following their recent addition of Santander to the roster.
3 moves the Blue Jays need to make immediately following Anthony Santander signing
The Blue Jays need to lock up Vladimir Guerrero Jr. once and for all
Now that the Jays have proven to be serious about contending in the upcoming 2025 season with their massive investment in Santander, that should signal that they aren’t pondering any type of rebuild any time soon. If that is indeed the case, then one of their immediate main priorities that they should deal with right now should be locking up their face of the franchise in Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
It would totally make no sense at all if the Jays make all these big signings, only to let their renowned best player leave in less than a year’s time. After all, Guerrero had been their main leader both offensively and defensively the past few seasons. More significantly, he has the elite ability to maintain a high average and on-base percentage despite being a power-hitting run producer. Even when his entire team seemed to be down and out this past season, Guerrero still carried the squad on his shoulders and continued to lead by example, helping to inspire the play of the young prospects that ended up being brought up to the majors.
Added to the fact that his heart and soul is to stay and win with Toronto, the Jays shouldn’t let go of someone that devoted and dedicated so easily. So despite being still miles apart in contract talks, if the Blue Jays were wise, they should not play around with it anymore and just get the extension done as soon as possible.
