The 2026 season is officially underway, and the Toronto Blue Jays are already off to a hot start, with back-to-back wins over the Athletics.
However, the buzz is still in the air about what was ultimately an emotional pregame ceremony Friday night at the Rogers Centre. There was a lot to celebrate for 50 seasons of Blue Jays baseball. Here are three of the best moments from that incredible pregame ceremony.
Blue Jays emotional pregame ceremony perfectly celebrates 50 years of history
50 years that felt like a dream
Dude, the Toronto Blue Jays really outdid themselves with this Opening Day ceremony.

The infield projections showcasing 50 years of baseball history was incredible, & the song choice was perfect - pure emotion. Bravo, @BlueJays!👏#OpeningDay #BlueJays50 pic.twitter.com/C95zvGCHJI
Where do we even begin with the opening video package of the ceremony? First, incredible to see a projection onto the infield. Using Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga's 'Die With a Smile,' the video package displayed on the field showcased the biggest memories of the last 50 seasons. From division titles to big playoff moments to the World Series, the package perfectly captured the essence of what it meant to be a Blue Jay.
Following that, another package featuring Blue Jays fans speaking to the team and showing reactions to Toronto winning the 2025 ALCS was shown over a cover of the Goo Goo Dolls' "Iris." There wasn't a dry eye in the room for something that tugged everybody's heartstrings.
Kudos to the production team for putting together something so special that'll live in the minds of Blue Jays fans for a while.
5 decades of greatness

What better way to represent five decades of Blue Jays baseball than by bringing out five icons from each decade of the franchise?
Ernie Whitt, George Bell, Pat Hentgen, Vernon Wells, and Jose Bautista were brought out for a collaborative ceremonial first pitch. Of course, it doesn't necessarily mean these are the ultimate five gentlemen who represent the Blue Jays. It's only the beginning of representing many legends who helped bring a spotlight to MLB in Toronto and eventually the nation of Canada.
Later in the year, legends like Joe Carter and Buck Martinez will get their moments. But since you can only fit so much in a pregame ceremony, the five who threw out the first pitch were a great start to commemorate Toronto's golden year.

Since the conclusion of the World Series, the topic of "will the Blue Jays raise an ALCS banner" has been debated amongst the fanbase. For the most part, the consensus was that the Blue Jays had to do something to commemorate their World Series appearance. Of course, big sports personalities like Sid Seixeiro have stated that it doesn't make sense to "acknowledge the failure." Agree to disagree.
There was no chance you would brush off the accomplishment of making the World Series or treat it lightly. It goes without saying that the other 14 teams in the American League would love to say they played in the World Series (ask Seattle, they'll tell you). On a night that you're celebrating half a century of accomplishments throughout the franchise, of course, 2025 needed to be involved. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and George Springer led the crowd in counting down to reveal the newly designed banners, with 2025 unveiled last. In one final salute to 2025, the team knew it was time to put it behind them and work their way to a World Series birth in 2026.
Unfortunately, the ultimate goal wasn't reached. It's something that the team and the fanbase will live with. However, for a team that was counted out at the start of the season, celebrating such a momentous achievement will never be a bad thing. Manager John Schneider said it best in Spring Training: "Once you hang a banner, there's a bullseye." If that's a bullseye, then let the Blue Jays get ready to defend. It's going to be a long season.
