After a slow start to the season and a battle with COVID-19, Blue Jays utility player Cavan Biggio is being recalled from AAA Buffalo and will be joining the club in Los Angeles as they take on the Angels in a four-game series this weekend.

Biggio started the year with just one hit through 23 at-bats while splitting time at first base, second base, and right field before he went on the COVID-19 IL. Once he was eligible to return, the club decided to option him down to the Bisons roster (he was already there rehabbing) to get back into game shape and get some regular playing time, as Santiago Espinal has emerged as one of the top players on the team this season at second base.

Down in Buffalo, Biggio got his groove back, authoring a .841 OPS through 10 games while adding three doubles, three RBI, and walking more than he struck out (10 vs. 6 respectively). With him seeming to be in a better state of mind and putting the ball in play down in AAA, the Jays brass decided to option down bench player Vinny Capra as a corresponding move to make room for Biggio on the roster.

Cavan Biggio returns to the Blue Jays lineup after a rough start to the 2022 season and battling COVID-19, with Vinny Capra being optioned to Buffalo.

Capra has seen limited action since being called up, starting in only two games and being used as either a pinch-runner or a defensive replacement as needed.  He went 1 for 5 with the Jays, earning his first MLB hit against the Tampa Bay Rays, while walking twice and striking out once during his time at the plate.

It will be interesting to see if Biggio can find his rhythm back in the Major Leagues and if he can put behind the rough start to the 2022 season and start approaching the plate as he did in Buffalo. Getting on base is his bread and butter and with the Jays’ RISP issues as of late, they need as many base runners as they can right now.
