If you’re a Toronto Blue Jays fan, you’re probably wondering about possible moves the team will make, to ensure help in the bullpen, and a spike in offense; which may mean calling up prospects. In approximately seven weeks, the Blue Jays will send representatives to the table to make their annual draft selections in the Major League Baseball draft, with their first-round pick scheduled 23rd.

What excites me about the product on the field, from the minors, upwards, is the player development and draft success. As I’ve mentioned in my previous piece, the Blue Jays have drafted 12 of the current 40-man roster. Being Canadian, another excitement is the wide talented range of Canadian draft-eligible prospects. The Blue Jays, being the only Canadian club, have all of these Canadian prospects right on their front porch. Baseball in Canada has grown drastically, with players showing out locally, from development programs, all the way to college success, and the Major League spotlight.  A kid out of Markham, Ontario, who played 2 positions growing up, pitched at 2 different colleges, and was drafted in the 2014 MLB draft by the Blue Jays; Canadian-born, Jordan Romano,  a draft success. A speedy, feisty outfielder In Dunedin, Florida, from Oakville, Ontario, drafted in the 3rd round of the 2019 MLB Amateur Draft, Dasan Brown, is currently ranked 27th of 30 top Blue Jays prospects. A Canadian-University pitcher, picked up as a non-drafted free agent, now pitching for the Vancouver Canadians, RHP Alex Nolan, from St. Catherines, Ontario. These are a few Canadian guys employed by the organization; there’s a lot more where these guys came from!

These names all have the potential to obtain professional opportunities, between the draft or non-drafted free agency. This may be the last chance at the draft for some of these players, some of them may be able to enter again due to college eligibility.  A few of these names strongly match the needs of the Blue Jays system, and I will dissect each possible draft pick in a scouting piece, within the next few weeks!
