The Toronto Blue Jays made a roster move earlier today, calling up veteran relief pitcher Carl Edwards Jr. from AAA while designating reliever Ty Tice for assignment in a corresponding move.

Signed to a minor league contract earlier this May, Edwards Jr. was brought in to the Blue Jays organization when quite a few pitchers on the active roster were hitting the injured list. Seen as a depth move considering numerous members of the pitching staff keep being added to the IL rather than coming off of it, Edwards Jr. possesses an extensive history at the major league level compared to other internal pitching options.

With over seven years of experience with the Chicago Cubs, San Diego Padres, Seattle Mariners, and Atlanta Braves, the right-hander boasts a career 3.68 ERA over 181.0 innings pitched with 102 walks and 243 strikeouts. He began the 2021 season with the Braves but was designated for

assignment after just one game, surrendering three earned runs and one walk with one strikeout through 0.1 innings pitched.

So far this season in AAA, Edwards has appeared in four games and has yet to allow an earned run over 4.0 innings pitched while striking out three batters and issuing zero free passes.

To make room for Edwards on the Blue Jays 40-man roster, reliever Ty Tice has been designated for asssingment.

Drafted by the Jays back in 2017 in the 16th round, Tice made his major league debut earlier this season and has been floating between the active roster and the Buffalo Bisons as players started to return and then go back on the injured list.

The right-hander currently sports a 5.14 ERA over four appearances with four earned runs, four walks, and six strikeouts through 7.0 innings of work at the major league level. The Arkansas native still has three minor league options intact but was DFA’d in order to make room for Edwards on the 40-man roster, as the front office decided to keep Jeremy Beasley (another potential DFA candidate) on the roster.

The Blue Jays now have seven days to either trade or place Tice on waivers, where other teams have the ability to pick up his contract and add him to their 40 man roster. If the relief pitcher does not get picked up by an opposing team and is not traded, the Jays will either have to release him or send him to the minor leagues.
