The Toronto Blue Jays draft spot was revealed for the upcoming 2021 amateur draft.

A typical Major League Baseball draft consists of 40 rounds with many amateur players having their dreams come true on draft night. Hearing their name called after all their hard work must be an exciting feeling, realizing their one step closer to their dream of becoming a major league baseball player.

The 2020 MLB draft though, only consisted of five rounds as the league wanted to help out the owners as they were losing money due to the Coronavirus pandemic with no gate revenue coming in.

Despite the draft being five rounds, the Toronto Blue Jays nailed the draft selecting Austin Martin with the 5th overall pick, taking three pitchers in CJ Van Eyk, Trent Palmer, and Nick Frasso while taking an outfielder in Zach Britton with their final pick.

In the 2021 draft, they’ll be able to add more players to their prospect pool as there will be between 20-30 rounds for the upcoming draft. While they will be able to draft more players, they’ll have to wait a while to be on the clock.

For the 2021 draft, the Jays will be selecting in the 19th spot of 29 as the Houston Astros were stripped of their first two picks of the previous and upcoming draft due to the sign-stealing scandal back in 2017 and parts of 2018. The Pittsburgh Pirates hold the first overall selection after finishing with a league-worst record of 19-41.

With a good season and a winning record (32-28) for the Blue Jays comes a lower draft pick. Drafting out of the 18th spot will be the St.Louis Cardinals (30-28) and drafting 20th will be the New York Yankees (33-27).

The last time the Blue Jays held the 19th overall pick back in 1999, they took a guy named Alex Rios who turned out to be quite good in Toronto. In six seasons with the Jays, he slashed .285/.335/.451 with 36 triples and 112 stolen bases.

While not many mock drafts are out at this time due to the unpopularity of the draft in baseball, I was able to find two. The first one done by Joe Doyle of prospectslive.com has the Blue Jays taking left-handed pitcher Christian MacLeod from Mississippi State. The second one by mymlbdraft.com has the Jays selecting right-handed pitcher Gunner Hoglund from Mississippi.

The draft is set to take place on July 11th during All-Star weekend.
