Is there a possibility that the Blue Jays give Jordan Groshans an opportunity in 2020?

The Blue Jays have finally opted to shift Vladimir Guerrero Jr. across the diamond to first base leaving the hot corner for Travis Shaw and highly touted prospect Jordan Groshans. Shaw is a placeholder for Groshans, however, in this awkward shortened season with no minor league games, could Groshans get an opportunity in 2020?

The 20-year old Groshans is currently tabbed the 31st best prospect in baseball according to Baseball America. The former 12th overall pick in 2018 is a natural shortstop but has been taking reps at third base in the minors presumably due to Bo Bichette having shortstop locked down for years to come on the big club.

Groshans missed most of last season due to a foot injury seeing action in just 23 games with the Lansing Lugnuts. In limited at-bats, he hit .337/.427/.482 with a pair of homers in 96 plate appearances.

The Blue Jays have Groshans on their 60-man roster and is actively training with the team as seen in the above web gem. The infielder needs reps having only played 71 pro games over the past two seasons.

Groshans is the third baseman of the future and projected to be a fixture on the Blue Jays infield for years to come. If he can prove he belongs early-on, he may get an opportunity in the not so distant future.

The Jays have the luxury of swapping out Travis Shaw, Rowdy Tellez, and Vladdy between first base and the DH spot should Groshans take a stranglehold on the hot corner. It would be a big jump from Single-A to the majors, however, he is not going to get reps anywhere else.

Next. Why moving Vladdy now is the right choice. dark

Time will tell how it all plays out but the brain trust has at least taken the first step in preparing for the arrival of Groshans.
