The Blue Jays were able to release the schedule for the modified 60-game season on Monday. How do things look for the boys in blue?

We finally got a look at the new schedule for the condensed 60-game season on Monday, which will kick start for the Blue Jays on July 23rd.

Assuming things go according to plan, the Blue Jays will open the season on the road against the Tampa Bay Rays, followed by a trip to Washington for a two-game series. After that, they’ll make their home debut against the Nationals on July 29-30, and then host the Philadelphia Phillies for a three-game set right after from July 31-Aug 2.

As we were told earlier in the year, the Blue Jays will see 10 games each against their own division rivals in the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Tampa Bay Rays, and Baltimore Orioles. With the way the league has been structured this year, they’ll join the NL East to form a “Super-East” division, which means they’ll also play games against the Atlanta Braves, Philadelphia Phillies, Washington Nationals, New York Mets, and Miami Marlins.

Rather than evenly split the last 20 games among the NL teams, the schedule isn’t completely balanced for each team. With that in mind, here’s how the breakdown goes for the Blue Jays:

6 games vs.= Phillies

4 games vs.= Nationals, Marlins

3 games vs.= Atlanta, Mets

It’s not ideal that the schedule isn’t balanced for all teams, but it could certainly be worse for the Blue Jays here. They’ll get the most games against the Phillies, and while they’re not exactly a slouch of an opponent, I feel like they’re a step or two behind Atlanta and Washington, and maybe even the Mets as well. Only getting three games against the Mets also means they’re not guaranteed to square off against Marcus Stroman, although that could still certainly line up.

Of course, even with a released schedule there are a lot of question marks that remain for the Blue Jays and the league. We’ve seen a few teams shutting down their spring training camps already while waiting for test results, and the players are already being asked to get ready pretty quickly in their “summer training” session of roughly. The Blue Jays themselves had to leave as many as 12 players behind in Dunedin while waiting for test results prior to travelling to Toronto, so there are definitely still hiccups to be worked out.

That said, it’s nice to see baseball on the calendar again, and hopefully we’ll be able to sit down and enjoy it later this month.
