Blue Jays: Randal Grichuk thinks outfielders need to play fearless in 2020
The Toronto Blue Jays outfield unit spent some time in Montreal together this offseason reflecting on what it is going to take for them to be successful in 2020.
Randal Grichuk recently sat down for a virtual interview with Hazel Mae of Sportsnet to discuss all things Blue Jays. During the interview, Grichuk divulged that he felt the outfielders as a unit needed to improve on their aggressiveness and play fearlessly in 2020.
The outfielders joined coach Mark Budzinski in Montreal for a team-building retreat this offseason. The teammates focussed on some self-reflection and what they need to improve upon individually and as a trio for the upcoming campaign.
The outfield was much talked about this offseason as it was speculated often that the front office would look to add a centerfielder either via trade or free agency. The team failed to add an outfielder and it appeared that Grichuk would shift to center with Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Teoscar Hernandez manning the corner spots.

The trio of Anthony Alford, Derek Fisher, and Billy McKinney was expected to be on the outside looking in as they vyed for that fourth outfielder role off the bench. I would expect that is the way things will shape out when the season resumes, however, both Fisher and Alford are out of options although the proposed idea of expanded rosters could benefit both players and afford the Blue Jays an opportunity to keep everyone in the mix at the major league level.
It is refreshing to see the Blue Jays thinking outside the box and also kudos to the players for entertaining the idea of a trip to Montreal during their offseason. Grichuk seemed to think the trip paid dividends and brought them all closer together as a group.
Now, all we need now is the MLB and the MLBPA to find some common ground and meet in the middle so we can have a season come July.
