The Chicago Cubs are reportedly eyeing Blue Jays utilityman Eric Sogard ahead of the July 31 trade deadline, a recent report suggests.
According to Patrick Mooney, Sahadev Sharma, and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the Chicago Cubs are “tracking” Blue Jays utilityman Eric Sogard ahead of the July 31 trade deadline.
On Sunday, MLB Network’s Jon Morosi reported that Sogard was “drawing interest” across several teams.
One of the most surprising bats in the American League this season, Sogard, 33, has slashed an outstanding .305/.369/.491 in 304 plate appearances spread across 69 games.

In addition, he has 10 home runs, 30 RBI, six stolen bases, 16 doubles, and two triples to go along with 28 walks and just 43 strikeouts.
As Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet posited earlier in the month, the Blue Jays likely aren’t going to be able to get any sort of top prospect for Sogard, though it’s not hard to see them getting something of decent consequence.
Sogard is one of many Blue Jays reportedly drawing trade interest over the past 24 hours, with closer Ken Giles and reliever Daniel Hudson both attracting the eye of the Boston Red Sox, reports say.
The Cubs currently sit in first place of the National League Central division, two games ahead of the Milwaukee Brewers and two and a half games ahead of the St. Louis Cardinals.
At this point, Sogard’s name has not been connected to any other specific teams aside from the Cubs, though, as many insiders have mentioned, more suitors could emerge in the coming days. More to come.
