Blue Jays minor-league news and notes from the morning of April 25, 2019, including injury updates on Devon Travis and Julian Merryweather, plus the status of Jonathan Davis.
Travis progressing in rehab
According to Laura Armstrong of The Toronto Star, second baseman Devon Travis is now hitting off of a tee and soft tossing as part his rehabilitation from a right knee meniscus debridement. Travis, who was placed on the 60-day injured list on March 25, has also begun “pre-running activities” with no issues.
Espinal on hot streak in Double-A
Blue Jays middle infield prospect Santiago Espinal has been raking in Double-A, boasting an OPS of 1.192 over his last five games with the Fisher Cats. Espinal, 24, has gone 9-for-21 over that stretch, adding three doubles and 9 RBI.
Bisons activate Andy Burns from IL
The Triple-A Buffalo Bisons have activated INF/OF Andy Burns from the 7-day injured list, per the International League’s transactions page. Burns, 28, was placed on the IL on April 12 and has slashed .258/.314/.355 in nine games this season.

Davis off IL, to Buffalo
OF Jonathan Davis (ankle) has been activated off the 10-day injured list and has been assigned to Triple-A Buffalo, per the team’s transactions page. Davis, 26, slashed .302/.388/.443 with New Hampshire last season with five home runs and 19 stolen bases.

Blue Jays release RHP Franniel Polanco
The Gulf Coast Blue Jays have released RHP Franniel Polanco, per the Gulf Coast League’s transactions page. Polanco, 21, was signed by the Blue Jays in October 2017 and pitched to an ERA of 1.35 in 33.1 innings with the GCL and Dominican Summer League Blue Jays in 2018.
Pompey “continuing concussion rehab”
According to Scott Mitchell of TSN, Dalton Pompey is “still continuing concussion rehab” and has not begun baseball activity. Pompey was placed on the 60-day IL on April 2 and has not appeared in a major-league game since May 11 against Boston.
Merryweather progressing, throwing batting practice
Armstrong also notes that right-hander Julian Merryweather, who is in the process of recovering from Tommy John surgery, threw a live batting practice session on April 19 and will soon be “reevaluated for game progression”. Merryweather, 27, was acquired by the Jays from Cleveland in the Josh Donaldson trade.
Former Jay Petricka back with the Brewers
Former Blue Jay Jake Petricka has been recalled by the Milwaukee Brewers after a short three-day stint in Triple-A. Petricka has appeared in four games this season for Milwaukee, striking out one and allowing two earned runs in four frames.
