This afternoon Dalton Pompey was pulled from the Blue Jays spring training game against the Phillies in Clearwater due to a freak accident.

As reported by Gregor Chisholm, Dalton Pompey was scratched from today’s start due to a freak injury before the game. It happened before the spring training contest when outfielder Dalton Pompey bumped his head on some bats that were on top of his locker.

Currently Pompey is being evaluated by team doctors, but he already has a fairly lengthy history with concussions in his career.

You will remember that Dalton Pompey suffered a concussion while sliding into second while playing for team Canada at the World Baseball Classic in 2017. He also suffered a concussion while playing in AAA in 2016, so there is some cause for concern with the number he has ready sustained to this point.

People who have had experience with concussion knows that it does not take much to become re-injured, or to have concussion symptoms show up after minor bumps to the head. That makes it very important that Pompey gets checked over immediately by team doctors before resuming baseball activities as a precaution.

The Mississauga native is having a decent spring for the Blue Jays this year batting 11H, 1HR, 7RBI, 2SB in 39 at bats with a .282AVG and .282OBP.

Dalton is out of minor league options this season putting him on the bubble for a roster spot with the Blue Jays. It seemed likely lately that the Canadian would make the team out of spring with the recent elbow injuries to John Axford and Ryan Tepera opening up spots, however if this injury does prove serious Dalton could be heading back to the ever familiar disabled list.

Dalton Pompey made his major league debut with the Blue Jays in 2014, but has failed to stay healthy enough to contribute to the major league roster since then. The 26-year-old switch hitter was the Blue Jays opening day center fielder in 2015 before being beat out of a job by current center fielder Kevin Pillar.

Next. Hernandez has to start full-time in the outfield. dark

We hope this is nothing serious and was just simply a harmless accident that the Toronto Blue Jays are showing an abundance of caution to, but it’s truly frustrating having to see the Canadian born player struggling with injury concerns once again this early into 2019.
