Marcus Stroman is reportedly the focus of recent trade talks between the Toronto Blue Jays and San Diego Padres, according to an MLB insider.

According to Jon Morosi of MLB Network, the Blue Jays and San Diego Padres are “engaged in ongoing discussions about a trade that would send Marcus Stroman to San Diego”.

Morosi adds that any trade that would take place likely wouldn’t involve top Padres prospects Fernando Tatis Jr., MacKenzie Gore or Francisco Mejia.

Morosi does mention, however, that pitching prospects Michel Baez and Logan Allen could be in play should the talks advance to a more serious point. Gregor Chisolm of MLB.com observes that on paper, the two teams line up pretty well, as the Padres boast the league’s deepest farm system, and the Blue Jays are in what one could characterize as a “prospect acquisition” phase of their rebuild.

In a separate tidbit of information, MLB.com’s AJ Cassavell confirms Morosi’s report that the teams have spoken, but cautions that “nothing’s close right now”.

Elsewhere in the league, Stroman has reportedly drawn ongoing interest from the Cincinnati Reds, though that team is likely removed from the race having just acquired some starting pitching help in the form of former Washington National Tanner Roark, and Dodgers veteran Alex Wood.

Stroman himself tweeted a single surprised emoji after Morosi’s report was published, echoing his long-standing desire to stay in Toronto and remain a member of the Blue Jays for as long as he can. He is, as many Blue Jays fans already know, a very active social media user.

It does not appear that anything is close at the moment, but, with Stroman’s name mentioned so frequently in talks this offseason, something may come together, and quickly. More to come.
