Blue Jays pitchers get no love from Steamer Projections in 2019

The Toronto Blue Jays starting pitchers received very little love from the staff at Steamer Projections for the 2019 campaign.

Steamer Projections is a projection system for baseball player statistics that is updated daily throughout the season and utilized by the likes of Fangraphs. The projection model does not forecast any of the four Blue Jays starters to have an earned run average lower than 4.00 in 2019.

Steamer projects Marcus Stroman to go 12-11 with a 4.14 earned run average while leading the starters with a 2.7 WAR. That projection ranks Stroman 30th in the league behind former Blue Jays pitchers J.A. Happ and David Price.

After Stroman, there is a definitive drop in the rankings as Sean Reid-Foley ranks 128th, Aaron Sanchez 129th, and Ryan Borucki 137th. Steamer drops the ball on this one, there is no way that the likes of Brandon Woodruff and Jaime Garcia outperform any of those three Jays hurlers.

Reid-Foley is forecasted to go 6-7 with a 4.33 earned run average and a 1.0 WAR rating while the oft-injured Sanchez gets totally slighted with an 8-10 projection coupled with an inflated 4.83 earned run average and a depressing 1.0 WAR.

Rounding out the staff is Borucki who was one of the feel-good stories of 2018 but not according to Steamer. The young hurler was saddled with an 8-9 record and a robust 4.88 earned run average along with a minuscule 0.9 WAR projection for 2019.

Trent Thornton 197th- 5-5, 4.45 ERA, 0.6 WAR

Julian Merryweather 230th- 4-4, 4.80 ERA, 0.5 WAR

Thomas Pannone 281st- 6-8, 5.22 ERA, 0.3 WAR

Ryan Tepera 303rd- 3-3, 4.20 ERA, 0.3 WAR

David Paulino 304th- 3-3, 4.0 ERA, 0.3 WAR

Oliver Drake 380th- 2-2, 4.05 ERA, 0.2 WAR

Tim Mayza 390th-3-3, 4.00 ERA, 0.2 WAR

Joe Biagini 413th- 2-2, 4.34 ERA, 0.1 WAR

If the majority of those projections come to fruition, you better keep the Rolaids stocked up in the medicine cabinet as she is going to be a loooooooong season north of the border.
