As suspected the Toronto Blue Jays have been quiet at the Winter Meetings thus far due partly to the fact the Jays don’t anticipate to be in the running for any of the big-ticket free agents this offseason.

General Manager Ross Atkins addressed the media on Monday afternoon and indicated that the Jays were not close to any potential deals. According to Shi Davidi of Sportsnet, Atkins met with five teams and five firms yesterday to discuss potential deals and signings while laying the groundwork for later in the offseason.

Atkins also met with the agent of Troy Tulowitzki in Las Vegas which is curious if nothing else, however, Tulowitzki does reside in the area but was not present for the meeting.

The Jays are fielding calls for the services of both Marcus Stroman and Aaron Sanchez but Atkins and company would need a “fair return” to pull the trigger on any potential deal involving either of the hurlers. (Hopefully, it is more than a fair return.)

It was reported a few days earlier that the Jays may have a varying degree of interest in starters Mike Fiers and Kendall Graveman. Both those pitchers would slot into the Jays financial comfort level and provide some starting depth.

If the Blue Jays are serious about bringing J.A. Happ back into the fold, the team may have to offer him a three-year pact. It appears most teams including the New York Yankees only want to commit on two-year deals with the aging hurler.

Expect the Jays to shore up their pitching staff before they start spending on relievers. The brain trust will employ the same motive as the last offseason when they slow played the free agent market for relievers until the very end.

There will surely be some sort of news before the end of the week involving the Blue Jays, it just may be non-consequential in the grand scheme of things.
