Blue Jays Report: Brandon Hyde a new managerial candidate

Chicago Cubs bench coach Brandon Hyde has apparently joined the race for the vacant managerial position of the Toronto Blue Jays.

Just days ago, it was reported by Jon Morosi of MLB Network that Cubs bench coach Brandon Hyde had interviewed for the managerial positions of the Los Angeles Angels and Texas Rangers.

With another update on Monday, it was reported by Morosi that Hyde interviewed to be the next manager of the Minnesota Twins, who fired manager Paul Molitor two weeks ago.

Now, Morosi reports that Hyde, a sudden person of interest for fans of multiple teams, is a “candidate for the Blue Jays managerial position”. Morosi also notes that it is “not clear if his formal interview has occurred already, but his name has been part of the team’s internal discussions”.

Hyde, 45, was briefly the manager of the Florida Marlins in 2011 before joining the Cubs as their bench coach. He coached first base for the 2016 season before returning to the bench coach position this season.

He has also served as a minor league manager, managing the Class-A Greensboro Grasshoppers from 2005 to 2006, the Double-A Carolina Mudcats in 2007 and the High-A Jupiter Hammerheads in 2008. For his career, he has a cumulative 351-343 record as a manager.

The extremely useful 2018-19 MLB Manager Vacancy spreadsheet, put together by Jon Becker of MLBDepthCharts, does not have Hyde connected to the Baltimore Orioles or Cincinnati Reds, two other teams who have been active in trying to find their next manager.

Hyde represents a younger, more energetic baseball mind that, more or less, fits in with the description set forth by Ross Atkins for the new Blue Jays manager. Regardless of whether or not he ends up interviewing for the job, it’ll be an interesting development to follow for sure.
