Blue Jays: Does John Gibbons belong on the Level of Excellence?

BALTIMORE, MD - MAY 21: Manager John Gibbons
BALTIMORE, MD - MAY 21: Manager John Gibbons

The John Gibbons era is likely going to come to a screeching halt at seasons end, however, does the skipper deserve to be enshrined on the Blue Jays “Level of Excellence”?

Earlier in the week, we asked our followers on social media the question if John Gibbons belongs to be commemorated on the Level of Excellence. We had just under 1000 fans complete the poll between both Twitter and Facebook.

551 people chimed in on Facebook with 65% agreeing that Gibby belongs on the Level of Excellence. 358 of the total 551 votes cast were in favour of the skipper being recognized.

The results flip-flopped on the Twitter poll as Gibbons only received 44% of the vote. Only 196 of the 446 Twitter votes were cast favouring Gibby.

Regardless of where you stand on the debate, I think we can all agree that John Gibbons has left his mark on the organization in his two stints spanning over a decade. Gibby will end his Blue Jays career second in both wins and games managed only trailing that of Cito Gaston who is recognized on the Level of Excellence.

Gibbons managed the club from 2004-2008 and then again from 2013 to present. The 56-year old skipper is signed through 2019 however it appears both Gibby and the Jays front office will agree to go their separate ways with the team ready to embark on a full rebuild.

Gibby will be remembered best for being a players manager, someone who would go into the trenches for his guys. His laidback, southern demeanor and sense of humour with the media will be something I will truly miss.

Who knows if Gibby will ever get his rightful place on the Level of Excellence but one thing is for sure he definitely deserves to at least be in the conversation.
