Blue Jays: Tellez hopes to get Rowdy in September

September call-up Rowdy Tellez has the opportunity to salvage a tough season and once again put his name back into the first-base conversation for the Toronto Blue Jays.

Rowdy Tellez was once thought to be the Blue Jays first baseman of the future prior to Justin Smoak obliterating baseballs at a rapid clip in 2017. Since then the 23-year old has experienced struggles both on and off the field as the farmhand has attempted to cope with his mother’s cancer prognosis and deal with the daily rigors of minor league baseball.

Tellez struggled in 2017 and then got off to a dreadful start in 2018 with the Buffalo Bisons. The first baseman hit .229 in April and failed to connect for his first round-tripper of the season until May 10th.

However, the resilient Tellez persevered hitting over .300 for the months of July and August while leading the Triple-A affiliate in home runs on the season with 13.  Tellez would finish the season hitting a respectable .270/ .340/.425 with 22 doubles and 13 homers in 112 games for the herd.

Tellez was summoned to the big club as a September call-up yesterday and now has the opportunity to once again put his name on the map as a legitimate major league talent. Still only 23, the young slugger will make his MLB debut in the coming days for the Jays.

If Tellez can impress out of the gate, the first baseman may be able to find consistent at-bats for the remainder of the 2018 campaign and set himself up nicely for a long look in 2019. Justin Smoak will undoubtedly have his team option for next season picked up however the Jays may look to deal the first baseman before he hits the free agent market if Tellez can continue to make strides.

Look for Tellez to get Rowdy during the final month of the season and finally cash in on the opportunity that is before him.
