The Toronto Blue Jays could learn a thing or two from the Boston Red Sox who recently cut ties with Hanley Ramirez and his exorbitant contract.

Hanley Ramirez is owed $22,750, 000 for the 2018 campaign and had a vesting option for 2019, however, the Red Sox chose to send him packing when they needed a roster spot in order to activate veteran Dustin Pedroia. The decision came down to Blake Swihart or Ramirez and the Red Sox chose the latter.

The 34-year old was hitting .254 with six homers and 29 runs batted in at the time of his designation and surely attitude may have also played a role in the decision but nonetheless, the Red Sox brain trust had the fortitude to cut ties with the aging slugger. They also did the same with Pablo Sandoval a few years back as well.

Now, look at the Blue Jays who are treading below .500 and refuse to bid adieu to Kendrys Morales and his .180 batting average. The 34-year old provides zero value defensively and has looked lost at the plate for most of the season.

Morales is in the second year of a three year $33 million dollar deal with $11 million owing for this season and $12 million for 2019. The Jays jumped the gun when signing Morales and handcuffed themselves into three seasons of Morales. Immediately after Edwin Encarnacion turned down their offer, the Jays focused their attention on Morales to replace Eddie.

The designated hitter is slashing .180/.258/.315 with four home runs and 29 strikeouts in 35 games. Thankfully manager John Gibbons has relegated Morales to the bench in 16 of the teams 51 games but he is still occupying a valuable roster spot on the 25-man roster.

The Blue Jays are on the hook for the money regardless if Morales is on the team or not so why not follow suit like the Red Sox and cut ties with Morales once and for all. Sometimes it is better to just admit you made a mistake and move on.
