The Toronto Blue Jays drafted a familiar name with their 8th round selection in the MLB amateur draft selecting Kacy Clemens the son of former Blue Jays pitcher Roger Clemens.

Unlike his father, Kacy Clemens is a position player honing his craft at first base with the Texas Longhorns along with his younger brother Kody. The smooth-swinging lefty is listed at 6’2″ and 195 lbs drafted 249th overall with an approximate pick value of $152.1K.

The 22-year old was selected in the 35th round of the 2013 draft by the Houston Astros but the first-basemen opted to forego signing with the Astros in order to become a Longhorn

In his senior year, Clemens hit .305 while swatting a team-leading 12 home runs and 49 runs batted in for the University of Texas. Clemens projects as a decent defender with power potential who should be an easier sign for the Jays considering his age.

As we all know Roger “The Rocket” Clemens spent two seasons north of the border with the Blue Jays between 1997-98. Senior Clemens won back to back Cy Young awards as a member of the Jays compiling 41 wins in just two seasons.

As you can see in the above tweet from Ben Nicholson-Smith, Kacy looks pretty good in Blue Jays blue even at a young age.

Kacy Clemens also saw his teammate Bret Boswell selected in the 8th round, 13 picks before him by the Colorado Rockies.

If Clemens is a chip off the old block then he will no doubt be possessed with tenacity and a never say die attitude that his father displayed on the bump during his career.

Kacy has a Youtube link attached to his Twitter profiling a great feature Longhorn Extra did on the Clemens family, Well worth the watch below.

Clemens will join a growing list of Jays minor leaguers whose fathers were legit major league talents. So far they have the offspring of Vladimir Guerrero, Dante Bichette and Craig Biggio maturing in the minors. Some pretty good family genes in that group.
