Blue Jays roster moves and injury updates
The Toronto Blue Jays had a flurry of updates involving their roster before they kicked off a three-game set versus the Oakland Athletics yesterday.
Jeff Beliveau Recalled From Buffalo
Reliever Jeff Beliveau was recalled from Buffalo and joined the big club in Oakland. The 30-year old hurler posted a 3.09 earned run average in 17 appearances for the Bisons this season. Beliveau last appeared in the majors in 2015 making 5 relief appearances for the Tampa Bay Rays, he would pitch a scoreless 8th inning in his Blue Jays debut last night.
J.P Howell Placed On DL
The corresponding move to compliment the Beliveau promotion saw the Blue Jays place reliever J.P. Howell on the disabled list with left shoulder tightness. The DL is better than the other alternative as many thought Howell may be designated for assignment to make room for Beliveau. The veteran has been terrible thus far this season surrendering 8 runs in 13 innings of work out of the bullpen.
Aaron Sanchez Throwing
Starting pitcher Aaron Sanchez played catch on Monday signaling that he may have turned the corner in his rehab back from blister issues on his throwing hand. The Blue Jays reported that they were encouraged by the results in the Sanchez road to recovery.
Russell Martin Returns To Action
Catcher Russell Martin returned to action after sitting out the last couple games with a neck issue. The Jays had catcher Rafael Lopez on stand-by in Oakland in the off-chance Martin was unable to go however the veteran showed no ill effects during last night’s contest although he did go 0 for 4 in his return.

Devon Travis Sits Out Due To Hand Injury
Second baseman Devon Travis was sidelined for yesterday’s contest as his left hand is still sore after taking a fastball from Luis Severino on Sunday. Travis is expected to get a few days off after x-rays came back negative. Look for Travis to be back in the lineup by the end of the week.
Glenn Sparkman Begins Rehab Stint
Rule-5 pickup Glenn Sparkman began his rehab assignment with Dunedin tossing 3 innings for the baby Jays. The 25-year old gave up 3 hits while fanning 3 in 3.1 innings of work in his first appearance of the season. Sparkman is recovering from a fractured thumb he suffered in spring training however, the Jays will have to make a decision on the hurler once he is healthy.
