Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Dalton Pompey began the next phase of his rehab assignment today as he suited up for the Buffalo Bisons playing 3 innings in his return.

The native of Mississauga is rehabbing his way back from a concussion suffered sliding into second base during the World Baseball Classic tourney earlier in this spring.

Pompey began the day hitting leadoff and playing centre field for the herd today versus the Charlotte Knights. The 24-year old went 1 for 2 with a first-inning single in his Triple-A season debut.

According to the Bisons twitter feed, Pompey also made a shoestring catch in the first inning to prevent a base hit. The speedster would strike out swinging in his second at-bat before being replaced in the 4th inning by Jake Elmore.

Pompey suited up for 4 games with the Dunedin Blue Jays prior to being assigned to Buffalo. He hit .286 with 4 hits including a double and a stolen base in 18 plate appearances.

The Blue Jays have not vocalized where Pompey will begin once healthy but his speed could be a welcome addition to the Jays lineup. Pompey could conceivably replace Chris Coghlan on the active roster now that all the Jays infielders have returned to action.

Pompey has spent parts of the last 3 seasons with the Jays playing 59 career games at the major league level. In his small sample size, Pompey owns a .222 batting average with 30 hits and 8 stolen bases in 148 career plate appearances.

His true value was on display during the 2015 postseason when Pompey was used primarily as a pinch runner off the bench for manager John Gibbons. He managed to swipe 4 bags in 4 attempts during their playoff run.

Hopefully, Pompey can finally put it all together and reach his full potential this season with the big club as he undoubtedly has the tools to be a successful major leaguer.
