According to sources, the Toronto Blue Jays are one of four teams interested in signing Canadian Brett Lawrie.

Jim Bowden of ESPN is reporting the Blue Jays, Rays, Royals and Mets all have an interest in the 27-year old native of Langley, British Columbia.

Lawrie was a former 1st round pick of the Milwaukee Brewers in 2008 drafted as a catcher. The Jays acquired Lawrie in the winter of 2010 shipping pitcher Shaun Marcum to the Brew Crew in exchange for the infielder.

The Canuck then was involved in one of the biggest trades in Blue Jays history when he was part of the package sent to Oakland in exchange for Josh Donaldson. Since leaving the Jays Lawrie has suited up for the A’s and most recently the White Sox who released him earlier this week.

The one-time fan favorite in Toronto has never lived up to the lofty expectations placed upon him and has struggled mightily to stay healthy throughout his career.

You would have to assume the Blue Jays are skeptical of Devon Travis being healthy if they entertain signing Lawrie. The infielder could play second base until Travis returns to action as well spell off Josh Donaldson at third if the need arises.

There have always been rumblings about the off-field character and clubhouse distraction that comes with Lawrie. However, this clubhouse is very different than of years past and it is fairly certain the likes of Russell Martin, Troy Tulowitzki, and Donaldson would nip any issues in the bud.

Jays Journal contributor Jesse Levine authored an article yesterday proposing the possibility of the Jays bringing back Lawrie and it received a resounding “No” from many vocal Jays fans on social media. Read the full article below.
