The Blue Jays Morning Brew for this week features a new episode of The Jays Nest Podcast with MLB trade deadline and Melvin Upton Jr. discussion

Coming off a busy day of baseball and transactions for the Toronto Blue Jays, The Jays Nest Podcast is back with episode number 84.

In a surprising turn of events, the Blue Jays made a headlining move the day before the podcast as opposed to the day after, so Shaun Doyle of Jays From the Couch and I have some fresh news to break down.

You can subscribe to the show using the links below, or listen to the most recent episode using the audio player. The Jays Nest Podcast can now also be found on Google Play.

Melvin Upton Jr.’s arrival in Toronto takes centre-stage on the show as Shaun and I break down both his positional and financial fit within the organization. The Padres agreed to pay all but $5 million remaining on Upton’s deal, leaving him as a very affordable option for the Jays next season as Michael Saunders and Jose Bautista approach free agency.

Upton is expected to start in left field this afternoon for the series finale, and his defensive abilities in the outfield should give the team flexibility. The right-handed hitter has done well against left-handed pitchers this season, as well, hitting .279 with a .903 OPS.

Along with taking listener questions and our weekly “hot” takes, we take a look ahead to the days leading up to the deadline on August 1st. This episode was recorded prior to the acquisition of Joaquin Benoit, but we both expect the Blue Jays to add further arms.
