Blue Jays MiLB Report: Pentecost homers, Reid-Foley starts

Toronto Blue Jays minor league scores and analysis for games played on Sunday, July 25th

Buffalo Bisons (52-50)   –   1
Gwinnett Braves (46-56)   –   2

Jose Bautista went 0-for-4 in his final rehab start with the Bisons and is expected to rejoin the Blue Jays today for their series against the San Diego Padres. Ryan Goins went 2-for-3 while Darrell Ceciliani was 2-for-4 with a solo home run, his sixth of the season. Andy Burns walked twice and singled.

Scott Copeland re-signed with the Blue Jays after an unsuccessful stint in Korea and will slot back in to his organizational depth role from 2015. His first start didn’t go quite as planned, though, with the right-hander allowing two runs on five hits over three innings. Wilmer Font piggybacked him well, throwing four shutout innings and allowing just a single hit. Aaron Loup and Danny Barned both pitched a scoreless frame on the back end.

New Hampshire Fisher Cats (45-55)   –   1
Trenton Thunder (62-39)   –   3

Ian Parmley‘s solo home run, his second of the season, was the Fisher Cats’ only offence of the day. Shane Opitz tripled while Christian Lopez went 1-for-4 with a walk out of the leadoff spot. Roemon Fields stole his 34th base of the season.

Taylor Cole worked around nine hits in six innings by striking out seven, limiting the damage to three runs. After John Anderson struck out three in two scoreless innings of relief, Jason Berken handled the ninth and struck out a pair.

Dunedin managed just four hits with singles from Richard Urena, Gunnar Heidt, Jonathan Davis, and Aaron Attaway. Heidt stole his seventh base and leadoff man Anthony Alford went 0-for-4 with a walk at the top of the lineup.

Sean Reid-Foley took his first loss with the D-Jays but still looked strong, allowing two runs on three hits over five and two-thirds innings, striking out five and walking two. This start moves Reid-Foley’s Dunedin ERA to 2.08 over eight starts. Brad Allen pitched the final two and a third innings, allowing three runs on three hits.

Lansing Lugnuts (53-47)   –   4
Kane County Cougars (43-57)   –   3

Max Pentecost led the Lugnuts with a mammoth solo home run, his seventh of the season. He went 2-for-4 and his average currently sits at .299. JC Cardenas was 2-for-4 with a double and Jake Thomas went 1-for-1, walking twice and scoring. Alex Maldonado put Lansing ahead with a two-run double in the fourth.

Jordan Romano allowed five hits and walked four in his five innings, but struck out five and limited Kane County to just two runs. Tom Robson bridged the gap with three innings of relief (5 H, ER, 3 K) and Jackson Lowery picked up the save with a clean ninth.

Vancouver Canadians (16-21)   –   3
Eugene Emeralds (27-10)   –   5

Right-fielder J.B. Woodman has gotten off to a strong start in his rookie campaign and continued that Sunday, going 2-for-4 with two RBI. Shortstop Deiferson Barreto provided the thump, hitting his first home run of the season while also working two walks.

Patrick Murphy gave the Canadians six good innings, allowing just two runs on three hits and four walks while striking out six. Zach Jackson struggled, allowing three runs on four hits and a pair of walks in just one and a third. Nick Hartman handled a clean one and two-thirds.

Bluefield Blue Jays (14-15)   –   6
Burlington Royals (16-14)   –   5

Bradley Jones launched a three-run home run in the eighth to give Bluefield the win. Second-baseman Nash Knight went 2-for-4, giving him a .424 average in 21 games. Right-fielder Nick Sinay was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Jose Espada allowed five runs (three earned) on four hits over four and a third innings. Kyle Weatherly picked up the win in relief, giving Bluefield three and two-thirds scoreless before Connor Eller picked up his second save of the season with a clean ninth.
