In the top of the first inning, the Toronto Blue Jays jumped all over the ace of Cleveland’s stacked pitching line-up and didn’t let up on the gas for the rest of the game. They ended up splitting the four game series 2-2.
The Jays scored a season-high eight runs in the sixth inning . Tulowitzki started off the inning with a three-run home run driving in Saunders and Martin (both walked by Tom Gorzelanny). The line-up then singled and doubled their way to eight runs after forcing Cleveland pitchers Tom Gorzelanny and Tommy Hunter to face a total of thirteen Blue Jay batters in the inning.
Junior Lake and Darwin Barney were the only two Jays players without RBI’s in the game. Russell Martin had five, Troy Tulowitzki had four, Edwin Encarnacion had three, Justin Smoak had two and the rest of the team had one each.
Martin got the ball rolling in the first inning with his three-run home run, driving in Donaldson who had singled, and Saunders who had doubled. Martin was also a part of that eight-run sixth inning and drove in a run on a single. Martin also drove in another RBI on a single in the eighth.
Tulowitzki’s RBI’s came on his three-run home run in the sixth inning, and a sac fly RBI in the fourth after Cleveland intentionally walked Martin to load the bases. Encarnacion’s got his three RBI’s with a sac fly in the fourth, a double in that eventful sixth, and another double in the eighth. Justin Smoak got his first hit, and his two RBI’s in the eighth inning with a two-run home run, driving in Martin who had singled.
Josh Donaldson got on base all six times he came up to bat with four hits, two walks, and three runs.
J.A. Happ had fantastic fastball command. He moved the ball all over the strike zone and left the game after seven innings with a season-high eleven in strikeouts. Happ didn’t walk a single batter, and only gave up one earned run on five hits. He had a shutout going into the seventh.
Drew Storen entered in the eighth in relief of Happ and had a clean inning with one strikeout. Aaron Loup closed out the ninth with a clean inning and two strikeouts.
Next up the Jays start their series against Kansas City as Edinson Volquez (7-7 with a 4.80 ERA) takes on Aaron Sanchez (8-1 with a 3.08 ERA) on Monday, July 4th at 7:07pm.
