Blue Jays Monday Mailbag: History of the Edwing
The Blue Jays Monday Morning Mailbag is back again, taking your questions on all things Jays ahead of Troy Tulowitzki‘s return to Coors Field.
Following Joel Sherman’s report this weekend – that the Blue Jays do not intend to sign either of Jose Bautista or Edwin Encarnacion – the mailbox filled up quickly with questions about their immediate and long-term futures.
There are many issues with any trade talk surrounding Bautista or Encarnacion, the foremost of which are their 10 & 5 rights and the fact that Toronto is well positioned to make a run at a playoff spot. Beyond that, however, their limited profile as National League players could further thin the field of suitors, and I’m not sure that Blue Jays fans would be thrilled with the return in a hypothetical deal.
We also talk Wade LeBlanc, the Blue Jays dominant triple-A lefty who was dealt to the Seattle Mariners this week for cash or a player to be named later. LeBlanc put up six shutout innings in his first start with the Mariners, but with little MLB-ready depth behind Drew Hutchison at the triple-A level, perhaps the Jays monitor the waiver wire for a useful arm behind him.
Lastly, a question I think you’ll all enjoy about the history of Encarnacion’s “Edwing” home run trot, which was born on a 2012 opposite-field grand slam.
