The Blue Jays have recalled Andy Burns and Chad Girodo, a day after optioning Aaron Loup and Scott Diamond

As the end of a long stretch of 17 games in 17 days is nearing, the Blue Jays move back to a seven-man bullpen and add a bench bat for the trip to the City of Brotherly Love.

Burns bounces back up from Buffalo with just a taste of the big leagues so far, having appeared in five games and picking up five plate appearances. The 25-year-old is currently in the midst of a 2-for-24 stretch over the past seven games with the Bisons and he comes to Toronto looking for his first major league hit.

Burns gives the Blue Jays some much needed flexibility off the bench as they make their way to Philadelphia and switch over to the National League style of play. He will likely get a shot at his first career base knock in pinch-hit scenarios for this mini-series against the Phillies.

With Loup struggling to retire righties and lefties alike, and looking vulnerable to the long ball, Girodo gets another chance to stick with the big club. Lefties are hitting just 3-for-17 against Girodo at the big league level as he has appeared in 11 games and eight and a third innings this season.

Girodo will need to keep the ball in the park however, as he’s allowed three home runs with the Blue Jays in a short amount of time. The team has made it clear that they won’t put up with that after Loup surrendered two home runs in four innings, leading to his demotion.

With five games left on the schedule before an off day, and the Blue Jays returning home against the Diamondbacks next week, there could be more moves to come on Monday. Who may come and go depends on the unknown status of Troy Tulowitzki‘s injury.
