Blue Jays MiLB roundup: Drew Hutchison stellar in debut
The Toronto Blue Jays minor league system went 1-2 on Saturday after Buffalo, New Hampshire, and Lansing had their original opening days delayed
Mother Nature was a little more cooperative on Friday night, and three of Toronto’s four active minor league affiliates were able to get in full games. Starting with the triple-A Buffalo Bisons, Drew Hutchison got the (delayed) opening day start
Buffalo Bisons (0-1) – 0
Pawtucket Red Sox (1-0) – 2
Hutchison looked very strong in his 2016 debut, throwing 5.0 innings with just one earned run on one hit and nine strikeouts. The right-hander needed just 83 pitches before handing off to Ben Rowen and Dustin Antolin. After Rowen chucked a clean sixth, Antolin allowed one run in 2.0 innings with four strikeouts of his own.
Unfortunately for Buffalo, the Red Sox countered with the highly-regarded Henry Owens who threw six innings of shutout ball, allowing just one hit and striking out eight batters of his own. On the day, the Bisons managed just three hits. All singles, those went to Jesus Montero, Jio Mier, and Casey Kotchman.
Scott Diamond and Chad Jenkins are scheduled to pitch for the Bisons Saturday as part of a double-header against the Sox.
New Hampshire Fisher Cats (0-1) – 1
Binghamton Mets (1-0) – 2

Jeremy Gabryszwski took the start for New Hampshire and had a fine outing of his own. The young right-hander threw 5.2 innings of one run ball, striking out six and walking two. Brady Dragmire pitched 1.1 innings of clean relief before veteran lefty Colt Hynes took the loss, allowing one earned run on three hits in his single inning.
Like the Bisons, the Fisher Cats managed just three hits on the day. Melky Mesa‘s home run was the only damage, with Jorge Flores and the dynamic Roemon Fields contributing singles. Fields also stole two bases, expect him to put up significant total this season.
Dunedin Blue Jays (2-0) – 8
Clearwater Threshers (0-2) – 3
Another win for the D-Jays on Friday, where they needed a group effort on the mound. Tom Robson pitched one inning off the top, allowing two hits and walking three (2 ER) in just one inning of work (38 pitches). Alonzo Gonzalez quieted the storm with 3.0 shutout innings before Brad Allen, Adonys Cardona, Jose Fernandez and Chris Rowley combined for the rest of the game. Allen was credited with the win (2.0 IP, 3 H, 1 BB, 2 K).
J.D. Davis was the lone hitless D-Jay on the day, with Christian Lopes, Richard Urena, Ryan McBroom, and David Harris all posting two-hit days. Lopes led the way with a triple, home run, and four RBI.
The D-Jays send high-ceiling lefty Ryan Borucki to the mound on Saturday night at the Florida Auto Exchange Stadium
Lansing Lugnuts (0-0)
Great Lakes Loons (0-0)
Another postponement for the Lugnuts, who are still waiting for their first pitch of 2016. They hope to get underway this afternoon at 2:05 ET.
