Blue Jays AFL and Winter League Update: 10/24/15

With our beloved Toronto Blue Jays no longer playing October baseball it is time to turn our attention to the future, and that means Fall and Winter baseball. We’ve got some Blue Jays minor league hands playing on several teams this off-season. Fall and Winter Baseball leagues have already begun in Arizona, Mexico, the Dominican, Venezuela and the Australian Baseball League.

More from Toronto Blue Jays Prospects

ABL kicked off their season on October 23rd, with the Canberra Calvary winning their opener 2-1. Playing a Double-Header on the 24th, the Calvary improved to 3-0 with a 8-7 and 10-7 win over Brisbane Bandits. The Blue Jays sent OF David Harris, INF Jason Leblebijian, OF Derrick Loveless, RP Colton Turner, and Phil Kish, none of whom are on the Jays 40-man roster.

Salt River Rafters (4-4)

Rowdy Tellez

The burly power hitter has played 6 games with 7 hits, continuing his strong start to hi s AFL season. After collecting 4 hits in his first two games, Tellez went hit-less in his next two, but collected a hit in game 5 and 2 hits in game 6. Rowdy now has two games where he has struck out 3 times and now has 10K’s in 6GP, which was not something that he did during his time with Lansing or Dunedin. Also, he has yet to draw a walk. In 6 games, Rowdy is hitting .269/.259/.462 with a .721 OPS, one HR and 9 RBI.

Emilio Guerrero

Guerrero is hitting .250/.400/.250 with a 650 OPS in 4 games. He struck out 3 times in 4 at-bats in his last game. He has 2 RBI, 3BB, and 5 K’s while playing all over the diamond. He is hitting .333 with RISP.

Roemon Fields

Fields has struggled in his first 6 games batting .174/.259/.217 with a .477 OPS. Roemon has stolen 2 bases in his last 3 games, but was caught twice in his first 3 games. He hit his first double on October 22nd. On the plus side, Fields has 3 walks and 2 K’s in his last 4 games, which is what you want to see from the 24-year-old speedster.

Chad Girodo

Everyone’s future favorite LOOGY has pitched 4 perfect innings over 2 appearances. He has one walk and 2 K’s with an outstanding 2.33 GO/AO.

Jeremy pitched 3 strong innings on October 19th, allowing a run on 3 hits while walking 2 and not striking out any. He was around his 2015 GO/AO numbers with 0.60 GO/AO in the game. He will be pitching later today (October 24th).

    Justin Shafer

The Shaf followed up his 2IP, 2H, 2K outing on October 14th with a 2IP, 2H, 3K outing on October 21st. Shafer has yet to walk a batter, which is very impressive considering he walked 10 batters in 22.1IP in Dunedin.

    Brady Dragmire

The hard throwing RP is perfect through 3 appearances. He has allowed 2 hits over 4.0IP with 2 BB and 6 strike outs. In his 2 innings on October 23rd, Brady throw 2 hitless innings of relief with 2 strike outs.

    Australian Baseball League

    Canberra Calvary

    David Harris

Batting leadoff in the first 3 games, Harris has exploded out of the gates with 7 hits, a home run, 6 RBI and a stolen base while striking out twice. Not too bad for a 36th round selection. He is hitting .583/.615/.833 with 1.449 OPS.

    Jason Leblebijian

Following Harris in the lineup, Jason has struggled with strike outs early (6K). Leblebijian has a hit in each of the Calvary games. He is hitting .231/.231/.308 with .538OPS.

    Derrick Loveless

The 22-year-old Loveless has been placed in the heart of the order (4-5) and has responded well. In game 1, he was 1-for-3 and 2 K’s. In game 2, he went 0-0 with 3 runs and 2 BB. Finally, in game 3 he went yard, driving in 2 RBI, scoring 3 runs, and walking and striking out once. In three games, Loveless is hitting .429/.636/.1.143 with a 1.779 OPS while scoring 6 runs and driving in 2 runs.

    Colton Turner

The Texan had a rough outing in his first and only appearance, allowing 2 runs on 2 hits and 2 walks through one inning.

    Phil Kish

Kish has pitched 0.2IP with a walk and a strike out in his only appearance.

    Dominican League

    Aguilas Cibaenas

    Andy Fermin

Fermin has got to be tired of being used in a reserve role, receiving 3 at-bats in 3 GP. He has one hit and 2 RBI.

    Bobby Korecky

The veteran relief pitcher has a 0.00 ERA after pitching 3 IP in 3 appearance. Bobby fanned 4 and no walks with out allowing a hit.

    Gigantes del Cibao

    Richard Urena

The talented shortstop has played 5 games collecting 4 hits in 5 games. He is hitting .222/.222/.389 with .611 OPS. Urena has a double, a triple and 2 RBI.

    Leones del Escogido

    Melky Mesa

Not likely coming back to the Jays organization in 2016, but he’s listed as a Blue Jays for now. Melky is hitting .143 in 3 games. He has 2 strike outs , a walk, a hit, a run scored, and a stolen base.

    Mexico

    Naranjeros de Hermosillo

    Jorge Flores

In 11 games, Flores is hitting .313/.436/.375 with a .811 OPS. He now has 5 walks, 3 strike outs, 2 doubles, 2 runs, but zero RBI. He is 1-for-3 in SB, which completely surprised me that he continues to get the green light. Flores not has 10 hits in his first 11 games.

    Tomateros de Culiacan

    Francisco Rios

The RHP has 1-1 record with 8.71 ERA over 10.1IP. He allowed 6 runs on 7 hits over 4 innings, while walking one and striking out 3 in his October 20th start. Rios had a bounce back appearance out of the bullpen on October 23rd with 3.1IP of one run relief, while walking one and striking out one.

    Venezuela

    Tigres de Aragua

    Austin Biben-Dirx

In 3 starts, the RHP is 2-1 with a 2.25ERA. He’s struck out 11 and walked 5, while holding opponents to a .193 batting average over 16IP. He pitched 6 innings allowing one run, while walking 2 and striking out 6.

    Navegantes del Magallanes

    Miguel Burgos

The 2015 draft pick allowed one run, one walk, and struck out one in just 0.1IP. The 5’9″ LHP is sporting a 27.00ERA. Has not made an appearance since Oct 8th.

    Tiburones de La Guaira

    Gregory Infante

The hard throwing Infante has converted 2 saves in three appearances. In his last appearance on October 20th, Gregory converted the save, allowing one run on 2 hits.  He has a record of 0-0 with a 3.00 ERA, a walk and 2 K’s.

    Bravos de Margarita

    Casey Lawrence

The durable RHP has made three starts for Bravos with a 0-2 with a 3.29 ERA over 13.2IP. He has 4 walks and 5 K while allowing 6 runs. He didn’t allow a run in his recent start, going 6IP, walking one and striking out one.

    Cardenales de Lara

    Michael Lee

0-1, 7.50 ERA in 3 starts. He lasted 4 IP allowing 5 runs in his recent start with a strike out.

    Caribes de Anzoategui

    Jonathan Torres

0-0, 3.38 ERA in 5 appearances. He allowed a run in his first appearance, but hasn’t allowed a run in his last four. It looks as though he is being used as a situational lefty, facing only one RHB in his 8 batters faced. Torres has walked one and stuck out 2 while holding opponents to a .143 batting average.
