When fans of the Toronto Blue Jays went to bed Friday night, we were happy that the club had done its share to clinch a playoff spot. See, we all had heard how the Blue Jays needed to win and the Twins and Angels had to lose. IT was more complicated than we’d like, but we got it. It made sense.
Hot on Jays Journal: The World Since 1993: Things Have Changed Since the Blue Jays Won it all!
R.A. Dickey did his job and won his 100th game against the Tampa Bay Rays. The Twins also did what they were supposed to do and lost to the Detroit Tigers 6-4. The Angels, though didn’t help. They beat the Mariners 8-4. So, it looked like we had to wait to clinch. But, that is not the case. The Toronto Blue Jays are heading to the post season for the first time in 22 years!
We woke up this morning to hear this surreal news. While the news itself takes a bit to digest after 22 years, the way it happened makes it even less palatable. Twitter was an interesting place to be as we all tried to digest it.

This pretty much sums it up. We all probably thought it would go much differently than this. We thought there would be partying in the streets, lots of video with champagne, etc. Turns out there was stunned silence. The scenario we were expecting didn’t happen and we’re still in the playoffs. How is that possible?
Well, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca explained it quite well for us. He must have been more awake than the rest of us to have his mental faculties working sufficiently enough to explain it to us. Basically, if you look at the AL West teams, they’re schedule dictates that the Astros, Rangers and Angels still have some head to head games left. Given that, and that if the Blue Jays lose every single remaining game (yeah, right), there is no way any of these teams can dethrone the Blue Jays.
So, we celebrate. The confusion is still lifting and it is giving way to euphoria.
In fact, it has turned into something of a joke:
But, here is a great summary of how we all must be feeling:
It is a great feeling and the Twitterverse is reacting:
Of course, we have to remember that there is still work to be done. A playoff spot is amazing, but the division is still there for the taking.
As well, the Blue Jays appear to be closing in on the Royals for the top record in the American League and home field advantage throughout the playoffs. With the AL winning the All Star game, this could provide a huge advantage for the boys in blue.
It didn’t happen the way we thought it would. But, it happened. The Toronto Blue Jays are heading to the post season. Saturday, September 26, 2015 will be a day we remember. Firstly, it is the day the playoff drought ended. Secondly, it will be remembered for the way we found out and how we found out. Sometimes Math can be a cruel. But, today, it is our friend. Let’s embrace it. Let’s bask in the feeling of playoff baseball coming to Toronto!
