Blue Jays take both games of double header with 10-7 win

43. 10. 39. Final. 7

After extra innings in the first game of the double header the Blue Jays and Yankees had a quick turn around to play another game. The rain started to fall but they held the 30 minute turn around to the first pitch of game 2. Marcus Stroman made his season  debut after an incredible recovery from a torn ACL. The Yankees trying to pick up at least one game in the double header sent out Ivan Nova to the mound. Ivan is 1-1 this year against the Blue Jays with a 5.21 ERA.

Josh Donaldson quickly got the first hit of the game with a 1 out single to left field. Josh quickly picked up his 6th stolen base of the season to put a runner in scoring position. Jose Bautista drew a walk to put two runners on base. Edwin Encarnacion hit into a fielder’s choice which left runners on 1st and 3rd with two outs. Justin Smoak flied out to strand a pair of runners.

In the top of the 2nd inning the Jays picked up another one out hit. This time Ezequiel Carrera hit a stand up double into the left field corner. Ryan Goins hit a dribbler that sneaked itself out of the infield. For some reason Didi Gregorius was issued an error on the play . Ezequiel Carrera scored from 2nd base. Ryan Goins advanced to 3rd base after two quick pass balls. Those were irrelevant as Cliff Pennington hit a long home run to right field. Ben Revere hit a single to right field with one out. With two outs Ben was given the green light and stole 2nd base. After a wild pitch Ben advanced to 3rd base. Jose Bautista hit a double to left center field to score another run. Edwin Encarnacion was issued a free base after being hit by a pitch. Justin Smoak was then hit by a pitch as well. That loaded up the bases with two outs for Russell Martin. Russell hit a two run double into the gap in left center field. That hit was the end of the game for Ivan Nova, he was only able to last 1.2 innings. Nick Rumbelow entered the game for the Yankees and was able to get Ezequiel Carrera to ground out to end the inning.

In the top of the 3rd inning the Blue Jays started to threaten again. Ben Revere hit a two out single to right field. After yet another pass ball Ben was able to advance to 2nd base. Josh Donaldson drew a walk to put two runners on base. Jose Bautista hit a fly ball to right field to end the potential threat.

Chris Capuano entered the game to pitch the 4th inning for the Yankees and picked up a clean inning.

After a rain delay the game picked up again in the 5th.

In the 5th inning the Yankees finally got to Marcus Stroman. After a couple infield singles Brett Gardner hit a three run home run to cut into the lead. Marcus got out of the inning with only the 3 runs for damage.

  • Bo Schultz entered the game for the Blue Jays in the 6th inning. Bo picked up a strike out but gave up back to back singles. Aaron Loup came in to try and close out the inning. Didi Gregorius hit a double to score the runner from 2nd base. Aaron Loup was then able to retire the next two batters he faced.

Justin Smoak led off the 7th inning with a single. With one out Ezequiel Carrera hit a single to put two runners on base. Ryan Goins struck out for the 2nd out of the inning but Cliff Pennington walked to load up the bases. Ben Revere, Josh Donaldson, and Jose Bautista went back to back to back singles to score 3 more runs.

Jeff Francis came in to pitch the 7th inning. He picked up a clean 7th but trouble brewed in the 8th. With one out Didi Gregorius and Stephen Drew  hit back to back singles. Brett Gardner hit his 2nd 3 run home to of the game. Steve Delabar came in to close out the 8th inning.

With Roberto Osuna having pitched game 1 of the double header John Gibbons went with Mark Lowe in the 9th. Mark picked up his first save of the season.

    Game Notes:

    • Edwin Encarnacion has now reached base in 42 straight games. While not as impressive as his hit streak, he does continue to reach base and produce runs.
    • The bottom half of the order continued to produce for the Jays. They picked up 6 H, 5 RBI, and 6 R.
    • Ben Revere, Ben Revere, Ben Revere. Ben picked up 4 hits, scored twice, a stolen base, and 2 runs batted in.
    • The Yankees seemed to come out flat today. After the extra inning game and the rain seemed to take all the wind out of their sails. In the first 2 innings they had a lazy play that resulted in an error, 2 hit batters, 2 wild pitches, a pass ball, and a walk.
    • Stroman DEBUT!
    • Mark Lowe picked up his first save of the season. After what felt like the entire pitching staff was used in game 1 the bullpen was needed for 4 more innings in this game. They held up pretty well considering.

    Grades:

Game Ball. Ben Revere. OFFENSE . A. The offense is a train that cannot be stopped. Again they picked up 10 runs on 14 hits. The top of the order flashed some speed with Ben Revere and Josh Donaldson picking up steals. Of all the starters Edwin Encarnacion was the only one to not pick up a hit, while he did still reach base. Top to bottom the entire order pitched in. This offense is exceptionally rounded with everyone contributing.

B-. Marcus had a decent start to the game. He brought a no hitter into the 4th inning. A fielder`s choice on a failed double play broke up the no hitter. He velocity was on point hitting 96 MPH. His control seemed a little off at times but seemed to be decent for his night. The rain delay as well as pitch count seemed to have put a cap on how far he could go. His final line was 5 IP, 3 ER, 5 H, 2 BB, and 2 K.. . Marcus Stroman. STARTING PITCHER

Game Ball. Mark Lowe. BULLPEN . C. The pen was needed for 4 innings. Once again they had a lead to work with which is always a nice feeling. Jeff Francis was the only pitcher to really get knocked around. Jeff gave up 5 hits and 3 earned runs. Otherwise, the group of Bo Schultz, Aaron Loup, Jeff Francis, Steve Delabar, and Mark Lowe combined for 4 IP, 9 H, 4 ER, and 4 K.
