Blue Jays Power Past the Tigers 15-1

15. 39. Final. 1. 63

The Blue Jays continued their home series versus the Tigers on Saturday afternoon. Fresh off a recall from AAA, Drew Hutchison made his 25th start of the season. Drew has pitched well at Rogers Center this year with a 10-1 record. The Tigers countered with young righty Buck Farmer. Buck was making on his 5th start of the season. So far Buck has had limited success starting and coming into Rogers Center versus the Blue Jays is not ideal for him.

The Tigers got the first hit of the game with a one out single by Ian Kinsler. The runner was stranded after a couple fly balls put an end to the inning.

The Blue Jays got on the board early. In the bottom of the 1st inning Josh Donaldson hit a one out single to right field. Jose Bautista followed that up with a walk to put two runners on base. The red hot Edwin Encarnacion hit a 3 run home run to deep left field. Justin Smoak continued the hits with a double to right field. Russell Martin reached base on a fielders choice as Smoak was thrown out going to 3rd base. The inning ended on a failed attempt to steal 2nd base by Martin.

Ben Revere led off the bottom of the 2nd inning with a double to right field. He was quickly cashed in as Ryan Goins hit a single to center field. Troy Tulowitzki followed that up with a single of his own to left field. Goins advanced to 3rd on the play putting runners on the corners with one out. Josh Donaldson popped up to 1st base for the 2nd out. Jose Bautista flied out to left field to end the threat.

In the top of the 3rd inning the Tigers led off with back to back singles by Jose Iglesias and Rajai Davis. Anthony Gose struck out for the first out of the inning. Ian Kinsler ground out to short as Rajai Davis just beat out the double play. The Tigers picked up a run on the play. Miguel Cabrera ground out to end the inning.

Edwin Encarnacion led off the bottom of the 3rd inning with a double to right field that was ruled an error on Tyler Collins. Justin Smoak drew a walk but was quickly erased as Russell Martin hit into a double play. Edwin advanced to 3rd base on the play. Ben Revere picked up another hit with a single to center field scoring the runner on 3rd base. After an arrant pick off play Ben Revere was able to advance to 3rd base. Kevin Pillar ground out to end the inning.

Ryan Goins led off the bottom of the 4th with a single to center field. Troy Tulowitzki was called out on strikes but Ryan Goins stole 2nd base on the play. Josh Donaldson hit a sacrifice fly to center field and Goins scored from 2nd base after Anthony Gose thought it was the 3rd out. Jose Bautista popped up to end the inning.

Ryan Goins scored on the play and Donaldson moved to 2nd base on the throw home. Jose Bautista hit a fly ball to deep center allowing the base runner to advance to 3rd base. Edwin Encarnacion hit another home run to put 2 more runs on the board. Justin Smoak hit a ground rule double to left field to extend the inning. Liam Hendriks entered the game to pitch the 8th inning for the Blue Jays and pitched a fairly clean inning.

Bo Schultz came into the game to pitch a fairly clean 9th inning.

    Game Notes:

    • Ryan Goins has a nice little 8 game hit streak going. Today he picked up a few more hits today. He has 11 hits over the streak for a tidy .500 average.
    • Edwin Encarnacion continues to see the ball better than anyone in the game. He extended his Major League leading hit streak to 24 games. Not only that but he also picked up 3 more home runs. Today he was playing a video game. He went 3/4 picking up 9 RBI, 4 R, 3 HR including a grand slam.
    • Ben Revere has his own 9 game hit streak brewing. He has been red hot with 19 hits over those 9 games. His average over that span has been a really nice .514.
    • Drew Hutchison has been dynamite in August. Today he picked up his 4th win. His has allowed only 7 earned runs over 30.2 IP. That is a nice 2.09 ERA. He has also allowed only 5 walks and picked up 24 strike outs.
    • The offense kept clicking the whole game. They were able to pick up at least 1 run in 6 of the 8 innings they batted. The early leads are really nice morale boosts for starting pitchers.

    Grades:

A+. The way the Blue Jays are hitting anyone can pitch for them. They were able to pick up 18 hits and 15 runs. If I could grade them higher than an A+ I would. Everyone except Jose Bautista was able to pick up a hit. Edwin Encarnacion, Josh Donaldon, Justin Smoak, Ryan Goins, and Ben Revere all picked up multiple hits. This offense is scary and seems unstoppable. . Game Ball. Edwin Encarnacion. OFFENSE

Rogers Center seems to be magic for Hutch. He has been pitching well in August but at home he has done well. Today was no different. He pitched very well. He spotted his fastball when he needed to. He picked up key strike outs. He did not walk a batter and only gave up a single run. This is the Hutch the Jays need for September ball. His line was a sparkling 7 IP, 6 H, 7 K, 1 ER, 0 BB. . . Drew Hutchison. STARTING PITCHER. A

I give the game ball to Liam only because it was nice to see a 0 on the score board after Hutch left the game. But, both he and Bo Schultz pitched pretty well. They combined for the needed 2 IP without giving up any runs. They each let 1 runner on base via hit or walk but didn’t let them cash in. Great game for everyone. . Game Ball. Liam Hendriks. BULLPEN . A+
