MiLB Recap – Lugnuts homer their way into first!

Buffalo Bisons vs Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs (Double Header)

Game 1 (Loss 1-3)

After the game was suspended Monday night the Bisons hoped to get the ball rolling with a short game but were unable to circle the bases.  Andrew Albers continued where Felix Doubront left of from Monday night and pitched well over 4.1 innings.  He allowed 1 run and struck out 3.  The biggest issue for the Herd was the inability to find some timely hitting.  They grounded into 4 double plays through out the game.  Steve Tolleson went 1-4 and collected the only RBI for the Bisons.  He plated Jonathan Diaz on a single in the 6th.

Game 2 (Win 3-1)

Jeff Francis showed that he still has something left in the tank as he continues to pitch well for the Herd.  Francis was able to toss 6 innings and allow just 3 hits with 5 K’s.  Playing a shortened game 2 Bobby Korecky came on in the 7th and picked up his 3rd save.  Francis now owns a 2.67 ERA and has 2 wins on the season for the Herd.

Offensively Matt Hague continues his hot streak and picked up another RBI in his 3-4 performance.  The RBI single gave Hague his 40th RBI of the season.  He also ranks a top the league batting average list with a stellar .350 BA.  The other 2 runs were scored on an error in the 3rd which allowed the Bisons to gain the lead.  Behind Francis and Korecky that would prove to be all the runs needed for the Herd

New Hampshire Fisher Cats @ Erie Sea Wolves (Loss 3-6)

Taylor Cole took the ball Tuesday and battled for 6 innings.  He did allow 8 hits which included a solo home run to Tony Thomas but deserved a better fate.  Cole allowed 2 earned runs but was let down by his defense which allowed another run.  Danny Barnes also threw 2 innings in the loss and allowed 3 hits with no earned runs but Cat errors lead to the 3 runs the Erie needed to win the game.  The defense let the team down Tuesday.  Cole and Barnes pitched well enough that this game could have ended much differently.  Yes there were plenty of hits allowed that Erie may have scored more runs regardless but the should be outs could have changed some of their fortunes.

Offensively Dalton Pompey continues to remain hot and collected another 2 hits.  He is working on his Player of the Week credentials well so far this week.  Last week he won those honors after raking homers.  Ryan Schimpf supplied the power on Tuesday however.  He popped a 3 run homer in the 4th inning to tie the game at the time.  The Cat offense would fall flat other then that though and would not score any more runs for the rest of the game.  The 3 run home run may have been enough offense if there wasn’t 4 unearned runs allowed on the three errors.

Solid pitching and a ton of offense will win you many games and was the case Tuesday for the Lugnuts.  The Lugs pitching staff was able to keep the Hot Rods to 3 runs even with the defense committing 4 errors.  Starlyn Suriel pitched 6 innings of shut out ball to allow the offense to outburst.  The stellar performance lead to the win that put the Lugnuts into first place.

The offense just pounded the ball all night and had a huge surge from the 6th inning on.  The team compiled 17 hits which included 4 home runs.  Jason Leblebijian collected 2 of those home runs and went 3-5 for the night with 3 RBI.  Richard Urena hit his 11th home run with a runner on in the 6th.  Chris Carlson also hit a homer and went 4-5 with a double, 3 runs scored, and 2 RBI.  Not to be out done Anthony Alford tied his career high with 4 hits in the game and was only a homer away from the cycle.  He also collected 2 RBI’s.  The offense is looking good as the now first place Lugnuts look to keep rocking during their home stand.
