Vancouver Canadians: Class A Short Season

After dropping game one 7-5, the Canadians send Matt Smoral (@MattSmoral) to the mound in an attempt to even the series and push the series to game three.

Things didn’t start out very well for the C’s.

Hillsboro jumped out in front 3-0 in the first inning on a Ijames RBI single, and a Jordan Parr ground-rule double. Matt Smoral didn’t look very good.

In the second, Hillsboro’s Steve Nyisztor was hit by a pitch, he stole second, advanced to 3rd, and scored on a Smoral wild pitch. Hillsboro, 4-0.

Matt Smoral struggled with his control. He throw 17 of his 30 pitches for strikes and was able to induce 5 ground ball outs to zero in the air. Smoral was undone by allowing 3 walks, committing a throwing error, and giving up a double. If this was a regular season game he might have had a longer leash…..but’s the playoffs and he was pulled after just 2.2IP. In came Jonathan Wandling to finish off the 3rd.

The C’s finally got on the board in the 4th. Chris Carlson opens the inning with a double. Ryan McBroom would drive him home with a double of his own. 4-1

The C’s added another run in the 6th. Chris Carlson got things started again, this time with a walk. Ryan McBroom singles. Runners advance on a Rowdy Tellez line drive single to RF. Carlson scores on a Mike Reeves ground out. 4-2.

Andrew Case would come in the 6th. Round of applause for Wandling, who pitch 2.1IP of shutout relief to keep the C’s in the game.

The C’s narrow the gap even further in the 7th. With two out, Franklin Barreto singles to left field and advances to third on a Chris Carlson single. Ryan McBroom comes through again with a single to RF and Barreto scores the C’s 3rd run. 4-3.

With 2 double in the 7th, Michael Kraft (@MichaelKraft16) would come in to relieve Andrew Case. Case pitched 1.2IP of no-hit/no-run relief. Again the C’s bullpen keep the game close. That is as close as the C’s would get. The Hillsboro Hops sweep the C’s and take the Northwest League Championship.
