Toronto Blue Jays infielder Maicer Izturis was scheduled to start at second base today but did not take the field in the first inning and instead was replaced by Jonathan Diaz who entered the game while Ryan Goins was moved to second.

John Lott of the National Post of the National Post confirms Izturis left the game with a left knee sprain.

Izturis, 33, is batting .286/.324/.314 in ten games for the Blue Jays this year and has been a positive contributor both at the plate and in the field. It was a promising start for the veteran infielder who posted a league-worst -2.1 fWAR in 2013.

His hot start was likely unsustainable and he had already started to cool off before today’s game but his loss will hurt the Blue Jays, who are currently dealing with a proverbial black hole at second base.

It’s not yet known how much time Izturis will miss but the Blue Jays should have Jose Reyes returning from the DL soon. However if he does hit the DL it will likely means that Ryan Goins time in Toronto gets extended and he will continue to start at second base. Goins has a base hit and a walk so far in today’s game.
