The Toronto Blue Jays have made a roster move following Friday’s 19-inning marathon loss to the Cleveland Indians.
Starting pitcher Drew Hutchison has been recalled from the triple-A Buffalo Bisons.
The 25-year-old Hutchison has been a consistent force atop the Bisons’ rotation, sitting near the top of the International League in strikeouts with a 6-3 record and 2.78 ERA. He last pitched on July 28th, throwing six innings of shutout ball against the Louisville Bats.
Unlike the Cleveland Indians last night, Toronto did manage to avoid dipping into their other four starters as part of the bullpen effort. They opted instead for Ryan Goins and Darwin Barney on the mound, so it is unclear whether Hutchison has been brought in for a spot start or to be used out of the bullpen.
With all of Toronto’s relief arms pitching yesterday, it is possible that Hutchison piggybacks Marco Estrada in today’s start to give the bullpen a collective day of rest.
Zwelling also reports that Bo Schultz has been optioned back to Buffalo in a corresponding move, a difficult pill to swallow after his gutsy performance ysterday. Schultz threw a whopping 48 pitches in two and two-thirds innings of relief, battling through reported cramping late in his outing while he was in visible discomfort.
While the current dynamics of Toronto’s roster don’t allow him to stay on the 25-man at this time, his last outing surely secures him another opportunity when one becomes available.
