The 21-year-old Greene was ranked as the Blue Jays top pitching prospect entering 2016

Conner Greene is moving up the ladder. The Blue Jays have promoted their right-hander to the double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats after making 15 starts with a 2.90 ERA as a member of the Dunedin Blue Jays.

While the top of Toronto’s pitching prospect talent has grown closer with strong seasons from Jon Harris, Sean Reid-Foley, Francisco Rios, and Angel Perdomo, Greene now represents the closest arm to being MLB-ready.

If he’s able to conquer double-A hitters in a similar fashion, depending on his workload, don’t rule out Greene as a dark horse bullpen candidate for late in the season.

Greene has thrown 77.2 innings so far in 2016, all with the D-Jays, striking out 51 and walking 38. That’s a ratio the Blue Jays will look for him to broaden, but in a season where the Toronto management has been very conservative with prospect placement and advancement, they’re showing belief in Greene.

Outside of two blips – his most recent start on Sunday and a tough outing on May 31st – Greene has been growing even stronger over his past 10 starts in which he’s posted a 2.60 ERA. Two starts ago against the Brevard County Manatees, Greene pitched seven innings of shutout ball allowing just three hits and striking out seven.

Control will continue to be the task at hand for Greene, and once he’s able to pound the zone more consistently, those strikeout numbers should rise as he undoubtedly has the raw velocity and “stuff” to dominate.

If he remains on his current schedule, Greene should make his double-A debut in the upcoming series against the Binghamton Mets.
