Blue Jays Drop Second Straight To Red Sox
After having pitched a near perfect game in his last start and a near no-hitter in the start before that, it was Marco Estrada’s turn again tonight. A third straight flirtation with a no hitter was not in the stars. Marco only lasted 2.1 innings. He threw 73 pitches, allowed 3 hits, 4 walks, 2 earned runs (4 runs in total) and had a strikeout. Fatigue from his previous two starts could certainly have played a part. He threw more than 118 pitches in both of those outings. After a loud home run from David Ortiz, Todd Redmond warmed up quickly and Marco was pulled later that inning.

Eduardo Rodriguez, on the other hand, breezed through the Jays’ lineup. The Jays managed just a single run via an Encarnacion double and a Colabello RBI single. Eduardo lasted 6 innings and allowed just 6 baserunners.
Todd Redmond prevented further damage with 3.1 scoreless innings of relief. Bo Schultz continued the scoreless relief and carried the Jays through the 9th. Steve Delabar allowed a runner to reach third but stranded him there.
The Jays bats showed signs of life in the seventh as Jose Reyes hit a 2 run, 2 out home run off of Tommy Layne. That put the Blue Jays back within one. The Jays couldn’t complete the rally getting shutdown in the 8th and 9th.
Game Notes:
– The Red Sox had a stolen base overturned after the Jays challenged
– Jose Bautista extended his recent slump to 0-24. He’s still all-star worthy but his bat has been mightily missed of late
– The Rays and Orioles both lost tonight which helps keep the Jays close in the AL east.
