It’s been a couple weeks since the last Fall/Winter League update. A lot has happened. The Arizona Fall League has come to an end and a few new prospects have started their winter seasons. So say good bye to the Arizona Fall League and hello to the Australian Baseball League.

Australian Baseball League

Canberra Cavalry

OF Anthony Alford got off to a very slow start, but seems to be finding his swing. He has 7 hits in his last 7 games raising his batting average from .167 to .220 in the past 10 games. Alford hit an inside the park home run and drove in two runs on the 14th, his best game this winter. He is also starting to see the ball better with 4 walks and 4 strikeout this past week.

C Jack Murphy continues to play very well in Australia. He knocked his first homerun out and drove in 3 RBI in the same game as Alford’s inside the park home run. He now has 7 RBI in his first 10 games.

1B L.B. Dantzler has cooled off a little after hitting .357 in his first 4 games. L.B. is hitting .256/.340.349 in his first 12 games and has yet to hit a home run. He has been doing a good job driving runs with 11 in 12 games.

2B Christian Lopes hit .214 in his first 4 games, but has since turned things around. Lopes is now hitting .341/.362/.432 with 8 RBI. Lopes’ approach at the plate has been very impress. He has walked twice and only struck out once. If he can keep this up he might put himself back on the map as far as the Blue Jays are concerned.

Liga Mexicana del Pacifico

Venados de Mazatlan

2B Ryan Schimpf hasn’t played since November 9th. Hitting .242/.330/.374 with 3 home runs and 12 RBI in 26 games.

Naranjeros de Hermosillo

SS Jorge Flores has continued to be in a cold spell. He is hitting .179/.250/.179 with 2 RBI. He is now hitting .243/.315/.297 with 10 RBI in 35 games. He hasn’t been great on the base paths with 5SB and 5CS, but he isn’t really known for his base stealing skills.

Liga Venezuela Beisbol Professional

Bravos de Margarita

3B Andy Burns has not appeared in a game since October 22nd.

RHP Casey Lawrence has dropped to -14, 3.40ERA in Venezuela with a loss on November 18th. He went 6.0IP with 8H, 3R, BB and 6K in the loss. He has now allowed 47 hits in 39.2IP and has only allowed 7 BB and struck out 20 with 1.69 GO/AO.

Tiburones de La Guaira

RP Gregory Infante continues to impress this fall with another set of flawless relief appearances this week. He hasn’t allowed a run in his past 7 appearances, while only allowing 4 hits and struck out 10. Alex Anthopoulos might want to think about giving this guy a chance this spring.

RP Tyler Ybarra hasn’t gotten a lot of work this fall. He has appeared in 4 games and has only pitched 2.0IP.

Liga de Beisbol Dominicano

Toros del Este

1B Matt Hague was hitting.267 in 14 games, but has hit .368/.390/.368 his last 10 games. He still has not collected an extra base hit, which is kinda his thing. In 24 games he is now hitting .313 with 19 RBI and no home runs.

Gigantes del Cibao

INF Jonathan Diaz has finally come back down to earth. He’s hitting .143/.294/.286 over his past 10 games but he did manage to hit his 2nd long ball of the fall. He is hitting .276 this fall.

Aguilas Cibaenas

3B Andy Fermin has finally gotten back on to the field after not playing since November 2nd. He played two games on the 16th and 19th. He went hitless on the 16th and walked in his only plate appearance on the 19th.

RHP Liam Hendriks is now 3-1, 1.98ERA in 5 starts. He has struck out 25 batters in 27.1IP and has limited his free passes to 5. Now if only he could have this much success in Toronto.

RHP Bobby Korecky has made 5 appearances and pitched 4.2IP. He is 0-0, with an 0.00ERA and 4 strike outs.

Tigres del Licey

INF Emilio Guerrero has not played since October 22nd.

Leones del Escogido

OF Brad Glenn has played 13 games and is hitting .283/.333/.321 with 6RBI and 2 stolen bases. He had a monster of a game on the 16th with a 3-for-5 game. He hit 2 doubles and drove in 5 RBI.

RP Jimmy Cordero made two appearances this past week. Cordero is now 0-0, 0.00ERA with 2 walks and 4K.

Liga de Beisbol Profesional Roberto Clemente

Cangrejeros de Santurce

C A.J. Jimenez hit .333/.333/.333 in his first 4 games and has continued to swing a hot bat, hitting .406/.457/.594 in his past 10 games. Anyone think signing Russell Martin lite a fire under Jimenez’ butt?

2B Dickie Joe Thon is hitting .188/.235/.188 in 7 games. He has struck out 10 times and only one walk.

Criollos de Caguas

LHP Efrain Nieves has made 4 starts and has gone 2-1 with a 4.82ERA. He has allowed 24 hits, walked 6 amd struck out 10 over 18.2IP.

Final Stats

2B Jon Berti hit .292/.418/.431 with 3HR and 8 RBI in 20GP. Berti hit .429 with 2HR, 4RBI, 3BB, 2K against LHP. Berti was a perfect 6-for-6 in stolen base attempts, but he didn’t really steal much between the first week and the last week. For a guy that hit 3 home runs, Berti didn’t manage to hit any doubles or triples.

C Sean Ochinko played 12 games and hit .310/.362/.500 with a home run and 11RBI.

CF Dalton Pompey  has hit .257/.358/.371 in 19 games. He hit 4 doubles and 2 triples. Pompey was a beast on the bases with 9SB and 2CS. Pompey really impressed me with his plate discipline 11 walks and 14 strike outs.

LF/2B Dwight Smith Jr. played 11 games and hit .262/.340/.333 while trying out a new position (2nd base). He stole a perfect 3-for-3 bases with 4 walks and 5 strike outs. In limited time, Smith hit .375 against LHP compared to .235 against RHP.

LHP Sean Nolin finished with a 2-1, 4.03ERA. Nolin even had some honours bestowed upon him. His had the best change up in the AFL (Full article). In his final start, Nolin struck out 7 and finished with 24 in 22.1 innings. He showed good control with 6 BB, but did allow 2 home runs over 7 starts.

RHP Roberto Osuna did put up stellar stats but was able to strike out 15 in 12.1IP and only walked 4 batters. He finished with a record of 0-3, 9.49ERA.

RHP Blake McFarland made 9 AFL appearances and pitched 12.2 innings. He struck out 15, allowed 9 hits and 8 walks. Blake finished with a 1-0, 0.00ERA.

RHP Arik Sikula is one of the guys I cheer for. He finished with an impressive 1-0, 2.61ERA record. He struke out 7 and walked 2 in 10.1 innings. He also registered 2 saves.

To all the participants of the Zona League, enjoy the off-season. See you in the spring.
