What has to happen for the Blue Jays front office to keep their jobs beyond 2025

Here's what Mark Shapiro and Ross Atkins need to do to secure their positions for the future.

4. The extension for Vladimir Guerrero Jr. needs to get done

As the face of the franchise, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. means as much to the Jays as the Jays mean to him. Not only is Guerrero the team's offensive engine at first base, he has also developed into one of the best defenders in the game, making him a key player on both sides of the ball.

And, like Bichette, Toronto needs to sign him to an extension. If the Jays fail to reach an extension with the 25-year-old star first baseman, he too will likely leave town via free agency following this season. There's no denying his departure would signal a rebuild.

To prevent that from occurring and instead instill a win-win situation for everyone, it is time for Atkins to get that Vladdy extension done once and for all.

5. The Jays must make the postseason this year

Even if everything else on this list happens, both Shapiro and Atkins jobs could still be on the line if the Blue Jays don't make the postseason. If the Jays' offseason moves aren't enough to get them back into back contention, then this season would represent a huge failure on their part.

The Jays went from a rebuilding team in the late 2010s to a perennial contender in the early 2020s — a testament to the front office's hard work to build a contender. However, the Jays took a huge step back in 2024 when they finished dead-last in the AL East. The Jays not making the postseason would signify a disappointing downward trajectory for the team, and could cost Atkins and Shapiro their jobs.
