It sounds like both John Schneider and Ross Atkins will return to Blue Jays in 2024

At General Manager Ross Atkins’ end of season media availability, he confirmed that Manager John Schneider would return, and that he would be back as well, working “tirelessly” on decisions on how to help the Blue Jays score more runs. Is that a good thing?

In just a little less than 30 minutes of media availability on the Saturday morning of the Thanksgiving long weekend in Canada, we learned a few things from Toronto Blue Jays General Manager Ross Atkins: Manager John Schneider will be back, yes, and Atkins is working “tirelessly” on decisions on how to help the team score more runs… which makes it sound like he’ll be back, too.

While he did say the decision to remove $131 million starter José Berríos from the game two ALWC loss at the Twins after only 47 scoreless pitches was Schneider’s decision alone, he also gave an unequivocal “yes” when asked if his manager would be back and said, “we stand by John’s decisions.”

Essentially he blamed another early playoff exit on the inability to score runs; and, when asked if there was any explanation for why the Blue Jays are now 0-6 in the postseason since Bo Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr., both arrived, Atkins noted that they need to help all of the returning players by scoring more runs, and that “we’ll work tirelessly until we do.”

He called it a “unique” decision, and that he couldn’t really question the run prevention effect of removing some left-handed hitters from the Twins’ lineup that gave the Blue Jays right-handed relievers a chance to shut things down later in the game. The pitching only gave up two runs, which gave them a chance at a better outcome; they just couldn’t score any runs.

We also learned that Guerrero would be spending the offseason working out in Florida, presumably under the watchful eye of Blue Jays staff in Dunedin. No word on whether Alek Manoah would be there or not as well as he looks to improve his conditioning ahead of the 2024 season.

So what do you think Blue Jays fans? How are we feeling about running it back in 2024 with Ross Atkins and John Schneider? And with only two seasons left before Bo and Vlad become free agents, is this the right direction for the organization?

My true baseball consciousness began with the great Blue Jays teams of the mid to late 1980s with Dave Stieb, Jimmy Key, Tom Henke, George Bell, Lloyd Moseby, Jesse Barfield, Tony Fernández and friends. My first ever game was at Exhibition Stadium, but I’ve also watched games from the RF porch of the old Tigers Stadium, and from both the old and new Yankee Stadium. My most memorable game was Game 5 of the 2001 ALDS when Soriano tied the game, and then Justice’s home run and Mariano put it away to help the Yankees beat Oakland 5-3 to win an emotional series that year. The stands were literally shaking. Follow @CharlieKime1 on X.
