Winter Ball Update: Pitchers

It’s been over two months since we looked at which Blue Jays prospects are playing winter ball in the Caribbean leagues, so here’s an update on the six pitchers still in action down south. Players come and go in the Caribbean Leagues, and there shouldn’t be too much stock put into the numbers that are recorded.

There are three prospects pitching in the Venezuelan Winter League (VWL), two in the Dominican Winter League (DWL), and one in the Liga Mexicano del Pacifico (LMP). Three players who were previously mentioned on this list have been removed, as Double-A New Hampshire arms Yohan Pino and Reidier Gonzalez are no longer playing and although Vancouver Canadians reliever Aleson Escalante is listed on the winter leagues website, he hasn’t pitched since October 15.

Reviewing the Arizona Fall League: Blue Jays Pitchers

Last year, the Jays sent three pitchers to the Arizona Fall League, starter Marc Rzepczynski and relievers Alan Farina and Matt Daly. Rzepczynski got the most attention in his six starts, allowing four earned runs in 31 innings.

The Jays opted to send only relievers this year, selecting 40-man roster members Chad Beck and Evan Crawford along with Wes Etheridge and Aaron Loup, who spent most of their 2011 campaigns with Hi-A Dunedin. While you can’t put much stock into AFL stats and their sample sizes are incredibly small, here’s a look at how the Jays’ pitching selections fared in this year’s edition of the Fall League.

Arizona Fall League Update

Today represents the two-week mark since the Arizona Fall League began, and the Blue Jays have a total of eight prospects (four pitchers and four position players) playing for the Phoenix Desert Dogs. Yesterday was a good day for Jays prospects, as Adeiny Hechavarria went 4-for-4 with three triples and four RBIS, Anthony Gose went 0-for-5 but added an outfield assist, Kevin Ahrens went 1-for-4, and Aaron Loup tossed 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.

The sample sizes are all small, but here’s a look at how the Jays prospects have fared so far. Out of the group, it’ll be interesting to see how Chad Beck does as he could compete for a spot in the Jays’ bullpen out of spring training.

Jays Minors Transactions Review: July ’10 to Feb ’11

With Spring Training kicking off this week, I thought it would be important and interesting to take a look at the last minor league transactions completed by the Jays. In order to get the best feel for what came and went in the minors, I’ll simply include the additions and subtractions from the Jays affiliates. The time period covered below is end of July 2010 to the last week, which I believe gives us a pretty decent review of changes made to the depth charts, some of which may have been missed by Jays fans.

Also, now that we will have covered the latest and greats of the minors transactions over the last 9 months, we will also be updating all Jays minors transactions in our new “Jays Minors Transactions” page, so check back there from time to time if you’re curious about what’s happening in the Jays affiliates and depth chart.

Winter League Update December 2010: Pitchers

I last took a look at Jays pitching prospects in the winter leagues on November 14th, and the majority of them have either continued their success or improved on it.
