Jays Journal: Brett Lawrie, Juan Rivera, Jose Bautista Poll, and Links

Here are some notes that we have accumulated from around all things that impact the Jays:

Brett Lawrie, the player who could eventually fulfil Jose Bautista‘s wish to return to RF, is apparently slated to begin his new position learning in AAA’s Las Vegas. He’ll be able to learn from players with lots of MLB experience, like Ryan Shealy and Corey Patterson, and having him in AAA should let us know immediately how close or far he may be from making his Jays debut. Lawrie could be the cockiest player the Jays have had since Roberto Alomar, and we all know how well that turned out! However, is anyone else a little apprehensive about placing the 21 year old so close to the strip? Food for thought. (more…)

Jays Minors Transactions Review: July ’10 to Feb ’11

With Spring Training kicking off this week, I thought it would be important and interesting to take a look at the last minor league transactions completed by the Jays. In order to get the best feel for what came and went in the minors, I’ll simply include the additions and subtractions from the Jays affiliates. The time period covered below is end of July 2010 to the last week, which I believe gives us a pretty decent review of changes made to the depth charts, some of which may have been missed by Jays fans.

Also, now that we will have covered the latest and greats of the minors transactions over the last 9 months, we will also be updating all Jays minors transactions in our new “Jays Minors Transactions” page, so check back there from time to time if you’re curious about what’s happening in the Jays affiliates and depth chart.

Jays Notes: Jose Bautista Arbitration, Ryan Shealy, Travis Snider, and Others

Here are some of the news making the rounds these last few pre-spring training days:

The arbitration hearing for Jose Bautista is set to take place on Monday, Valentine’s day. Will cupid’s arrow strike the two sides in order to bring a long-term deal to fruition, or will it miss them entirely and allow for the hearing to take place? If the latter holds true, the Jays-Jose relationship will surely change forever. Just to recap, Jose is seeking $10.5 million, the middle point is $9.05 million, and the Jays want to settle at $7.6 million. Surely there’s a chance that a 2,3 or 4 year deal gets done here. If not, he may become the best trade piece the Jays have at the deadline, because there’s no guarantee that they could retain him for 2012 if he has another monster season.
