For what it’s worth, Winston Abreu, signed by the Jays to a minor league contract in December, is the only member of the Jays organization currently playing in the Caribbean Series in Puerto Rico, where he plays for the Dominican Republic. He didn’t allow a hit and struck out 2 in his first appearance, before he gave up 4 hits and 4 earned runs (including 1 home run) with no strikeouts over his last 2 outings (1 inning).

Here are some Jays happenings, news and notes:

Update: Adeiny Hechevarria has been optioned to HiA Dunedin in order to begin his career with the Jays. I’m not sure what that means for Tyler Pastornicky, who had been manning SS on the team, but Adeiny was also simultaneously place on the “temporarily inactive list” while he gets himself sorted out. It’ll be a little while longer before we can know for certain where Pastornicky will wind up (different position or up a level). In any case, Adeiny joins Travis d’Arnaud as stars in the making for the Dunedin squad – two very good reasons to go see this team play.

For those of you who like to use Apps to get access to quick and easy information, LMK has a new Toronto Blue Jays App available here that will provide you with all the news and information you need to know on a timely basis;

Marc Hulet of Fangraphs takes a look back at Ricky Romero’s latest gem;

Jack Moore, also from Fangraphs, agrees with me that the Fred Lewis deal was a no-brainer for the Jays, while it raised question marks all over for Giants fans;

Fangraphs provides us with some interesting information here. The Jays, despite their stellar record, have a lot of question marks so far in 2010. They rank 25th in MLB with a .232 batting average, and are right in the middle of the pack for stolen bases with a 15th overall ranking with only 5 SBs (something Fred Lewis will help make stronger). They do have many strong parts in comparisons however, as they are 4th overall in HRs with 14, 7th in RBIs with 48, and are 1st overall in doubles (tied with Florida) with 28 so far in the year;

Richard Griffin touches on fans and attendance so far in this piece for The Star;

The absolute best Adeiny Hechevarria details you can ever want can be found in Bob Elliott‘s piece on the events that led up to his signing and officially becoming a Blue Jays player;

Alex Anthopolous indicated that the Jays view Fred Lewis as more of a LF than a CF or RF. Cito Gaston, meanwhile, has said he’ll find as much playing time as he can for Fred, but it sounded like Fred will have to earn his spots in the lineup. It’ll be interesting to see if he leads off when he does start for the Jays;

Alex Anthopolous also seemed to be content with treating Adeiny Hechevarria the same way they would a player who was signed as a Junior from College. This means that we’re probably 1.5 to 3 years away from seeing Adeiny in Toronto unless he really tears up the minors.
