The Blue Jays made their first cuts of the spring last night, sending catchers Carlos Perez and Brian Jeroloman, infielder Brian Bocock, outfielder Ricardo Nanita and right-handers Ryan Tepera and Scott Richmond to minor league camp.

Perez, 21, worked primarily as a bullpen catcher and only saw the field in one game as a defensive replacement. The Valencia, Venezuela native is looking to rebound from a down year with Lansing in 2011, where he dealt with colder weather while playing full-season ball for the first time.

After being claimed by the Pirates off waivers earlier in the offseason before being re-claimed by the Jays, Jeroloman caught the ceremonial first pitch in the Jays’ spring opener back on March 3. The 26-year-old appeared in six games for the Jays this spring, going 2-for-8 at the plate with one double and three RBI.

Bocock, 26, was a relatively unknown name heading into spring training but he made the most of his opportunity. Not considered a top prospect by any means, he went 6-for-13 at the plate in 11 games with one triple, one home run and five RBI. His best game would likely have been when he earned the start at third base in the road half of the Jays split-squad schedule back on March 7.

Nanita, 30, reported to spring training after a very busy 2011 campaign. The Dominican Republic native spent the first half of last season with Double-A New Hampshire before closing the year out with a strong 51-game showing with Triple-A Las Vegas and playing winter ball. This spring, Nanita appeared in 10 games and went 4-for-12 at the plate with two RBI.

Tepera, 24, spent the 2011 season as a member of the Dunedin Blue Jays starting rotation. He held his own in his first big league spring training this year, giving up three earned runs on five hits in seven and 2/3 innings of work.

Richmond, 32, tossed three scoreless innings in his two spring appearances this year. The right-hander returned from injury last season to throw 113 innings for Triple-A Las Vegas, managing a 7.33 ERA and 1.814 WHIP.

On Tuesday, we took a look at how eight Jays prospects were doing in the Arizona Fall League, but there are also other winter leagues outside of North America where prospects will flock to and play.

The Jays currently have 11 players (six position players and five pitchers) sprinkled amongst three of the four Caribbean Leagues. The Venezuelan Winter League (VWL) and Dominican Summer League (DWL) each have five Jays prospects playing there right now, with one playing in the Liga Mexicano (LMP). Unlike the Arizona Fall League where players are selected ahead of time, players come and go in these Caribbean Leagues, so I’ll update these every few weeks or once a month.

The Caribbean Leagues give some prospects the chance to return home to their country while also working on their game for next season. The sample sizes are small yet again, but here’s a look at which prospects are playing winter ball and how they’re doing.

With Spring Training kicking off this week, I thought it would be important and interesting to take a look at the last minor league transactions completed by the Jays. In order to get the best feel for what came and went in the minors, I’ll simply include the additions and subtractions from the Jays affiliates. The time period covered below is end of July 2010 to the last week, which I believe gives us a pretty decent review of changes made to the depth charts, some of which may have been missed by Jays fans.

Also, now that we will have covered the latest and greats of the minors transactions over the last 9 months, we will also be updating all Jays minors transactions in our new “Jays Minors Transactions” page, so check back there from time to time if you’re curious about what’s happening in the Jays affiliates and depth chart.

With the recent press on the official Jays site regarding the success Adam Loewen has had in the Arizona Fall League thus far, it is important to give recognition to the other Jays prospects that have had just as much, if not more, success than Loewen. Loewen has had a very good winter thus far though, posting a .342/.419/.658 line in 9 games to go along with 3 HR and 14 RBI. It is definitely nice to see Loewen, the former 1st round pick and starting pitcher, continue to improve at the plate and strengthen his case on a path to another Major League debut.

Here’s a look at what some of the other notable Jays picks are up to in the Winter Leagues:

CF Darin Mastroianni:

Mastroianni has made a statement in the Venezuelan Winter League so far that’s for sure. He has played the most out of any Jays prospect in winter ball thus far, and through 24 games his numbers are as follows:

.427 AVG, 4 doubles, 2 triples, 1 HR, 14 RBI, .500 OBP, .551 SLG

Not only are those numbers impressive, Mastroianni has drawn 17 walks and been 9-for-12 in stolen base attempts. He’s definitely making a case for a promotion from Double-A New Hampshire, or even a possible look with the Jays in 2011. (more…)
