It has been a disappointing offseason so far for many Blue Jay fans. The Jays’ bid fell short for Yu Darvish, Prince Fielder appears to be out of reach, and almost all of the big free agents are off the board.

As I’m sure you’ve all heard and read about by now, one of the biggest sticking points for the Jays when speaking about the possibility of signing a player like Prince Fielder is the length of the deal. More specifically, the Jays supposedly have a policy whereby they will not commit to signing a player to a deal that includes a term longer than 5 years. I wrote supposedly, because I entirely believe that this is simply great posturing by a GM and a team that wants to limit the risk they take on when signing their own players and free agents. Top 10 Reasons Yu Darvish Makes Sense for the Jays

I initially wrote about my thoughts on Yu Darvish in this piece, written on January 28th 2011, and stick to most of those thoughts as being reason enough for the Jays to go out there and grab Yu Darvish for themselves. There are fairly straightforward reasons for wanting the Jays to sign him if they do win the bidding process. Here are my top 10 reasons to look forward to a Darvish addition to the Jays, in no certain order:

1 – Forget about the bid money

It doesn’t apply to the yearly contracts you’ll see on the Cot’s Baseball Contracts site, and is something that is completely owner vs owner. Who wants that player more, and who wants to flaunt their money more. That’s it, that’s all. Rogers has been saving up for a rainy day for quite a few years and make up one of the wealthiest ownership groups in all of MLB. If you ask me, it’s about time that they start to act like it. Without ownership saying “go get him”, no team could “afford” a bid for the best international talent available, and that’s what Darvish is, the best international talent available.

Also, how much money did AA save for Jays ownership when he dealt Vernon Wells to the LAA? I’m pretty sure that covers the bulk of the bid.

So, if we agree that 51.1 million or more, the reported highest bid for Darvish, should be ignored as a “sunk cost”, the real question is whether or not Yu Darvish is worth the $8 to $12 million per year his salary will dictate? That brings me to the next point…. (more…)

Chiming In On The Prince Fielder Blue Jays Rumors

Last Thursday, FOX Sports’ Jon Paul Morosi’s article on why the Blue Jays should sign Prince Fielder went viral. The Fielder craziness continued over the weekend, as CBS Cleveland “reported” yesterday that Fielder had narrowed his list of teams down to three — the Rangers, Brewers, and Blue Jays. That article, however, omitted a link to a published report and even the mere mention of a source, not to mention it was authored by an Indians beat reporter for a radio station.

Then, after touching down at the site of the winter meetings in Dallas late last night, Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos indirectly addressed the Fielder speculation to reporters by saying that if something leaks in the media, then it’s probably inaccurate. Add that to his previous comments with Paul Beeston regarding free-agent spending, and it’s safe to say that Fielder signing with the Jays is a pipe dream at best.

As unlikely as it is, though, given the offensive upgrade Fielder would bring, the Jays’ organizational depth at first base, and, outside of Joey Votto, the lack of elite first basemen on the free agent market in the years to come, taking a run at Fielder makes sense.

Bluefield Jays Head to Appy League Finals as Jays Lose to Yanks

Although the Jays have been hovering at around .500 all season long, many of its minor league affiliates have been dominant and are in the thick of the playoffs. Such is the case for the Bluefield Blue Jays, the newest addition to the Jays minors system and a level of play that did not exist for them in 2010, as they beat Elizabethton Twins for the 2nd time in 3 days, putting them head-to-head with the 2010 champion Johnson City Cardinals.

Incredible author and Montreal Expos aficionado Jonah Keri is officially no longer a part of FanGraphs, and he chatted for almost three hours yesterday here. There were a fair amount of Jays questions asked, so here’s a rundown of them in order.
