Reflecting on the State of the Franchise

The Blue Jays held their annual State of the Franchise event for season-ticket holders last night, and both Scott and I were able to attend thanks to a gracious invitation by the Blue Jays. We were able to meet many Blue Jays online writers, many of whom we have either linked here on the site or contacted in the past, so it made for an enjoyable night. It was also nice to meet, in person, many of the people that we’ve interacted with on Twitter.

Along with quotes from each member of the panel — Blue Jays president and CEO Paul Beeston, general manager Alex Anthopoulos and manager John Farrell — here are some thoughts from the event, specifically on the five-year contract maximum, roster turnover, the bullpen, and the audience’s portion of the Q&A session.

Rundown of Alex Anthopoulos’ time on Jays’ telecast

During tonight’s game against the Angels, Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos joined Buck and Pat in the booth for the entire fifth inning to discuss a variety of Jays matters going forward. There were a lot of nuggets that were worth listening to including Dustin McGowan, Yu Darvish, free agency, future payroll, second base, and New Hampshire’s starting rotation pitching for the Jays next year.

Jays Jots: James Paxton, Jose Bautista, J.P. Ricciardi

After a very, very good Super Bowl comes some Jays related matter, and the great news that it’s all baseball from this point forward!

For what it’s worth, Winston Abreu, signed by the Jays to a minor league contract in December, is the only member of the Jays organization currently playing in the Caribbean Series in Puerto Rico, where he plays for the Dominican Republic. He didn’t allow a hit and struck out 2 in his first appearance, before he gave up 4 hits and 4 earned runs (including 1 home run) with no strikeouts over his last 2 outings (1 inning).
